Baseball beats Old Dominion 4-2

Cavaliers score three first-inning runs

The Virginia baseball team (17-12, 6-6 ACC) beat Old Dominion (16-12, 1-8 CUSA) 4-2 at home Tuesday night behind three runs in the first inning.

Sophomore shortstop Tanner Morris hit a leadoff double for Virginia. Freshman second baseman Nic Kent followed Morris and also reached base and would eventually score.

Sophomore left fielder Brendan Rivoli hit a single to score Morris, then Kent came in on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Senior first baseman Nate Eikhoff later hit a single to drive in Rivoli, the final run of the first for Virginia.

Freshman left-hander Billy Price made his first collegiate start on the mound for Virginia, pitching two one-two-three innings to open the game. Sophomore right-hander Devin Ortiz got credited with the win after 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of Price.

The two teams traded runs in the third. Rivoli scored his second of the game on another wild pitch. He would finish the day 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Morris and Eikhoff also each had two hits apiece.

Old Dominion scored another run in the seventh off Virginia senior left-hander Riley Wilson to make it 4-2, the eventual final score. Sophomore left-hander Andrew Abbott earned his first save of the season.

The Cavaliers next play in a weekend series at Notre Dame. The games are on Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
