The Virginia baseball team (16-12, 6-6 ACC) lost two of three games in a weekend series against No. 4 N.C. State (27-2, 10-2 ACC) at Doak Field at Dail Park.

Game 1: Virginia 4, N.C. State 3

The Cavaliers won the first game of the series behind three hits from freshman third baseman Zack Gelof.

Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Gelof scored on a single by sophomore right fielder Alex Tappen.

The Cavaliers added two more runs in the top of the third, including one on a single from Gelof that scored freshman second baseman Nic Kent.

Virginia scored its final run of the day in the fifth on an RBI double by senior first baseman Nate Eikhoff that drove in senior center fielder Cameron Simmons.

N.C. State scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth, forcing the Virginia starting pitcher, sophomore right-hander Griff McGarry, out of the game after 4.2 innings. Sophomore left-hander Andrew Abbott came in to relieve him and went 3.1 innings of relief, giving up only four hits.

Abbott and sophomore right-hander Kyle Whitten each gave up a run in the ninth, but Virginia held on for the win. Abbott was credited with the win and Whitten earned the save.

Game 2: N.C. State 3, Virginia 0

Virginia lost Saturday night as N.C. State sophomore right-hander Reid Johnston pitched a complete-game shutout.

Johnston gave up only six hits and a walk, striking out seven Virginia batters. Virginia’s starter, junior right-hander Noah Murdock, also recorded a quality start, his team-high fourth of the season. Murdock pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Sophomore right-hander Blake Bales pitched one scoreless inning in relief of Murdock, surrendering one hit to the Wolfpack.

Sophomore shortstop Tanner Morris recorded the only multi-hit performance of the day for Virginia, going 2 for 4. The Cavaliers did not have a single extra-base hit against Johnston.

Game 3: N.C. State 8, Virginia 7

The Cavaliers fell in a back-and-forth game Sunday afternoon after both teams scored four runs in the seventh inning.

The Wolfpack took the early lead in the bottom of the second off Virginia freshman right-hander Mike Vasil.

Virginia scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Gelof singled to center to drive in sophomore left fielder Brendan Rivoli, then scored on a N.C. State error. However, the Wolfpack tied the game at two apiece in the bottom of the frame.

In the top of the fifth, Morris homered to center, his fourth of the year, putting the Cavaliers back ahead, but the Wolfpack scored two more in its turn at the plate.

N.C. State entered the seventh inning ahead 4-3, but a ground-rule double by Kent drove in junior catcher Logan Michaels and junior right fielder Cayman Richardson, then a single by Simmons scored Morris and Kent to make it 7-4.

However, the Wolfpack scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to go back ahead 8-7 — the eventual final score.

The Cavaliers will next play Tuesday at Disharoon Park at 5 p.m. against Old Dominion.
