Women’s basketball falls to Wake Forest, 62-56

The Cavaliers’ shooting struggles out of the gate kept the game out of reach

Virginia dropped one of its first games of 2020 Thursday night, falling to Wake Forest 62-56 in Winston-Salem. The Cavaliers’ (7-10, 2-4 ACC) poor shooting on three pointers and free throws allowed the Demon Deacons (11-6, 4-2 ACC) to hold off Virginia in a game that went down to the wire.

The first half was dominated largely by Wake Forest, who held a 16 point lead at one point early on. Virginia scored just seven points in the first quarter and wound up facing an 11-point deficit going into the second quarter. Notably, the Cavaliers went scoreless for the first three minutes of the game, missing their first eight shots while Wake Forest opened up a sizable lead.

Virginia started off hot in the second quarter, scoring the first five points of the period. However, Wake Forest quickly responded and held a 30-14 lead before the Cavaliers scored eight straight points to cut the Demon Deacons’ lead to single-digits. Virginia improved its first quarter shooting from 17 percent to 54 percent in the second quarter, but the Cavaliers failed to connect from deep in the first half and sank just four of their eight free throws. Although the Demon Deacons shot just 35 percent from the floor in the first half, they drained four three-pointers.

Virginia outscored Wake Forest 15-11 in the third quarter thanks to a late run fueled by buckets from senior forward Lisa Jablonowski, freshman guard Shemera Williams and senior guard Dominique Toussaint. After Toussaint’s three pointer in the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers cut the Wake Forest lead to just three points. Nevertheless, the Demon Deacons held on despite a late Virginia scoring run in the waning minutes of the game led by senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby.

With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 7-10 on the season, including 2-4 in ACC play. Virginia was led in scoring by Willoughby with 20 points, Williams with 11 points and Toussaint with 10 points while Jablonowski had a near double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Next, Virginia hosts rival Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at the John Paul Jones Arena and the game will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
