Senior Carl Soderlund won his singles match in straight sets against Boston College but fell to his Central Florida singles opponent in three sets.

The Virginia men’s tennis team split its matches over the weekend, knocking off Boston College before falling to Central Florida.

Virginia began the weekend with a comfortable 6-1 win over Boston College Friday night at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers (4-3, 1-1 ACC) won the doubles point after strong performances from all three of their pairings to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Sophomore William Woodall, senior Carl Soderlund and No. 115 sophomore Ryan Goetz each picked up straight-set victories in their singles matches to clinch the victory for Virginia. Junior Matthew Lord recovered after dropping his first set to win 2-1, while senior Ammar Alhaqbani won his match after a marathon second set tiebreaker that ended 17-15. Boston College senior Sean Mullins earned the only point for the Eagles (1-2, 0-1 ACC) with a victory over freshman RJ Fresen.

The Cavaliers returned to action two days later, falling to Central Florida by a score of 6-1. In the doubles point, the pair Soderlund and Lord won the first match for the Cavaliers, but the Knights (4-0, 0-0 AAC) won the ensuing two matches to secure the early point.

Virginia kept the singles matches competitive, as four of six matches played through three sets. However, Central Florida won five singles matches to clinch the victory. Lord was the lone winner for the Cavaliers, defeating No. 108 sophomore Bogdan Pavel in three sets.

Virginia returns to action next weekend with a challenging schedule ahead. The Cavaliers will host No. 8 TCU Thursday night at home at Boar’s Head Sports Club at 6 p.m. before heading to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face No. 7 Wake Forest Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Wake Forest Tennis Center.
