THE LIFE of a college student is not easy. There are too many decisions that students have to make. Pre-Med or Pre-Comm. Intramurals or couch-lounging. The Corner or the dining hall. Study or watch TV. Sleep or nap. Rugby Road or apartment party. And as procrastination is the common thread that connects each and every diverse student, most don't decide on important decisions like these until the last minute. Which leads to the most vital decision many will have to make this weak. What to do for Spring Break.

A VALIANT knight stands at a fork in the trail. He's been on his current path a short time, but now there are two new trails veering off in opposite directions. Both will get him where he wants to be eventually, but he must choose one or the other, and there is no turning back. Every year, University students are faced with a similar tough decision. Before Winter Break, most students already have decided to either sign an off-Grounds lease or wait and see how they do in the on-Grounds lottery.

Not many students knew about or even used the Maury Hall shooting range, where ROTC students and Pistol and Rifle Club members could practice firing guns, and now many never will get the chance.

THERE is nothing quite like the feeling you get when you help someone less fortunate than yourself. And there is no time quite like the present -- Oct. 23 is the ninth annual Make a Difference Day, when millions of Americans will participate in an effort to improve their local communities. Following this spirit of helping others, the University should encourage students to volunteer. Many high schools have a community service requirement for graduation. The University should have a similar requirement.

The best Dan Ellis story turns out not to be true, after all. He didn't request the phonebook-sized Virginia playbook while still in high school and memorize it before he arrived in Charlottesville, which didn't prompt head coach George Welsh, not one given to hyperbole, to call him "the smartest player I've ever seen."
