In January of this year, Donald Trump paid a visit to Liberty University in an attempt to rally Republican evangelicals to his campaign. He started his speech by incorrectly reciting a verse from the Bible, saying “Two Corinthians” in an attempt to refer to “Second Corinthians.” The crowd responded with muddled laughter. The university’s president, Jerry Falwell Jr., gave a rather embellished introduction to the Republican nominee, praising him and all his endeavors as a businessman and donor. He even related Trump to his father. While he mentioned this praise should not be interpreted as an endorsement, it is hard to see it as anything else. Furthermore, Falwell has continued to show his support despite the leaked video of Trump’s alleged sexual assaults on women in the past years. Falwell should not use his national platform as a means to vocalize his support of candidate Trump, as he is misrepresenting Liberty University and miscommunicating the mission of the school.

My fellow Americans, the time is nearly upon us. Every four years, our nation comes together to elect our next president. For some, the day is a celebration of liberty, a bastion of that funny little thing called democracy. For others, it is a time to reflect and think, “Wait, we still have class on Election Day? We totally got the day off for that in elementary school. Man, I miss elementary school.” Me too, my friends, me too. But here we are.

As part of the information first-years receive about sexual assault, the John Paul Jones arena jumbotron depicted a harrowing sequence of events, demonstrating the possible roles bystanders can play in preventing a sexual assault. Sitting in the crowd, I had to stop myself from screaming at the bystanders, who simply sat back as a potential sexual assault was plainly occurring right in front of their eyes. Therein lies the fundamental failure of the program put on by the University — the reliance on overworn tropes of sexual assault and an accompanying failure to address the ambiguity which all too often surrounds sexual assault. When sexual assault prevention programs rely on the overworn cliche of the predatory strange man taking advantage of the intoxicated woman, they fail to prepare students for the murky reality of sexual assault on Grounds.

A federal judge recently decided University administrator Nicole Eramo, who seeks $7.85 million in defamation charges against Rolling Stone Magazine, is a “limited purpose public figure.” This ruling raises the bar for Eramo’s attorneys, who now have to prove that the Rolling Stone article — which detailed a now-discredited gang rape at Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and painted a negative picture of Eramo in the process — contains “actual malice” instead of merely a negligently published “defamatory falsehood.”

Last week, College Republicans Events Chair Ali Hiestand defended the process that resulted in her organization voting to endorse Donald Trump. Although I am disappointed with this outcome, I agree it would be unreasonable to overturn the results of this vote simply because the outcome is unsatisfying. I implore my fellow liberals to respect this decision and attempt to understand what circumstances would motivate likely voters to support the Republican presidential nominee this November, though I can understand why some would be disappointed by the latter’s decision to do so. Regardless, while many Trump supporters are justifiably upset over the direction the country is headed, this should not justify supporting an individual who threatens the safety and civil liberties of our fellow citizens.
