All students, faculty and staff at the University will be automatically enrolled in the U.Va. Alerts text messaging system starting this weekend. The update was announced via an email to the University community from J.J. Davis, executive vice president and chief operating officer, and Timothy Longo, associate vice president for safety and security and University chief of police. Previously, individuals were automatically enrolled in the alert system by email, not phone number.

Thousands of University students flocked to the 45th annual Foxfield Races to watch a series of six horse races under the hot sun Saturday. According to data from the Albemarle County Police Department, the races this year did not lead to any arrests for public intoxication, and no one was reported to have received on-site medical treatment.

Third-year College Tichara Robertson was elected Student Council President in a contested election, earning 56 percent of the vote. Students also voted to pass the referenda put forth by the Honor Committee, which outlines a multi-sanction system, one of the single largest changes to the Honor system since its adoption of a formal constitution in 1977.

UPDATE: An additional page of Ellis’ text was released Wednesday, detailing a conversation between Board member Doug Wetmore and Ellis about coverage from The Cavalier Daily and The Washington Post which details Ellis' role in bringing a eugenicist speaker to Grounds while he was attending the University in 1975.

The University received a record-breaking 55,845 applications for the Class of 2027, a 10 percent increase from last year when the University received 50,813 applications. The admissions cycle came to a close Jan. 5 with the regular decision deadline — application numbers and statistics are not official.

Students, faculty, administrators, community members and families filled John Paul Jones Arena Saturday afternoon to honor the lives of the three victims and two students injured in Sunday’s shooting. Held at 3:30 p.m., the memorial service included musical selections, prayers, reflections from close friends and a poignant moment of silence.

Christa Acampora found her love for higher education during 20 years of teaching across multiple states and, after expanding into administrative roles, joined the University in August as the Dean of the College and Graduate school of Arts and Sciences. A native Virginian, Acampora found the mountains calling her back home to professors and faculty at the University — where she hopes to foster a sense of community among students.

The Center for Politics held a conference Friday to discuss the state of democracy five years after the events of Aug. 11 and 12, 2017 and one year after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va), shared his thoughts on faith and threats to democracy before honoring U.S. Capitol and D.C. Metropolitan police officers who received the first-ever Defender of Democracy awards.

The Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American Affairs and the Office of African American affairs hosted a teach-in aimed at contextualizing the recent vandalism of Dawson’s Row and the hate crime at the Homer statue and to offer a space for students to share reactions. Hosted in Newcomb Ballroom from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, the gathering was open to the University community.

The Board of Visitors’ Finance Subcommittee on Tuition met Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Carruthers Hall and voted unanimously to issue tuition rebates to all in-state undergraduate students at the University for the 2022-23 academic year. The proposal will next be voted on by the full Finance Committee and then the full board.
