Students, families and guests attending the Third Year Ceremony heard a variety of speakers including University President Jim Ryan and were able to pick up their class rings at John Paul Jones Stadium on Friday afternoon. Third Year Ceremony is a longstanding University event that commemorates the completion of the first half of a class’ undergraduate studies.

Roughly 70 people attended a screening in the McIntire Amphitheater of the short documentary “Unveiling: The Origins of Charlottesville's Monuments” Saturday evening, which details the history of the Confederate monuments in the city, most of which were erected between 1909 and 1924.

University Transit Service announced Tuesday that it has purchased four new battery-powered electric buses to add to its existing fleet of 40 buses as part of an effort to make the service more environmentally sustainable. As a typical bus runs for about 12 to 15 years, this purchase sets into motion the long-term plan towards the University’s sustainability goals.

Students gathered at the Multicultural Student Center Friday afternoon for a teach-in on the activism of Black and Indigenous students at the University. The event included a tour of places around Grounds that were sites of protest and recognition for Black and Indigenous students, such as the MSC, the Black Bus Stop, the Office of African American Affairs and the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers.

This past weekend, over 1,200 alumni and guests attended Black Alumni Weekend events both on and off-Grounds. After the 2021 BAW was postponed due to public health concerns, this was the first in-person BAW since before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. Programming began with a series of dinners on Thursday evening and ran through Sunday afternoon, closing with a faith-based service and brunch at Alumni Hall.

The seven-day average positivity rate for COVID-19 was 13.79 percent Thursday, up from 5.6 percent last week. Test positivity rates for students — which have been consistently lower than rates of faculty and staff — have shot up dramatically to 15.6 percent, surpassing the 9.68 percent positivity rate of staff and faculty members.

The Finance Committee of the Board of Visitors met Friday morning and voted in favor of submitting budget amendment requests to the Virginia General Assembly seeking the allocation of an additional $75 million for the University’s forthcoming Institute of Biotechnology. The Committee met in-person at the Rotunda Boardroom at 8:30 a.m. with a live stream option for public viewing.

Nine students spoke out both against and in support of an amendment to the constitution of the Honor Committee that will be voted on this week at a town hall held by The Cavalier Daily Tuesday evening — the proposal on the ballot seeks to amend Article II of the Honor Committee’s constitution by easing the single sanction for committing an Honor offense from expulsion to a two-semester leave of absence.

After the University Police Department and Charlottesville Police Department responded to an initial armed robbery report, an individual was found in the restricted construction area behind Alderman Library and was taken into custody. A weapon was discovered on the scene, but UPD and CPD are not aware of any shots being fired on Grounds during this incident, per a press release.
