The University’s “blue light” emergency phones were first installed 30 years ago, though they are still used and installed today. Long before cell phones, the blue lights served as a direct connection to the University Police Department. However, with the rise of cell phones, the tall blue towers have been used less frequently. Additionally, many students today do not fully understand the function of the lights and how to use them.

Young Alumni Reunions, commonly known as YAR, attracts thousands of alumni from the four most recent graduated classes each fall. This Saturday night, the Alumni Association expects more than 3,000 young alumni to pack the Amphitheatre for the Homecomings event.

Each year, a committee of student leaders selects 47 rising fourth-year students to live on the Lawn. For many, a Lawn room signifies a student who has poured countless hours and spirit into making the University a better place. However, the prestige of the Lawn can obscure the stress these students face when determining housing for their last year of college. By the time Lawn room decisions come out in the spring, priority deadlines for on-Grounds housing have passed and most students have already signed leases.

The Asian Student Union and its membership organizations are currently hosting a number of events to celebrate Asian heritage and promote outreach within the greater University community coinciding with Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Events range from comedy nights and large cultural days to food tastings and networking events.

The City of Charlottesville is currently accepting applications for a new Chief of Police to replace current Chief Tim Longo, who will step down May 1. Longo has served in the position for 15 years and announced his resignation Nov. 23.
