Dear friends, we have come upon one of the most exciting times of the academic year: the end. With fourth-years preparing to graduate, first-years worrying about finals, and everyone else working on their beach bodies, I am pleased to remind you that one of the most persistent University traditions is now upon us: the Foxfield Races. Colloquially known as “Foxfield,” this tradition proves to be quite the spectacle every year, which is why you need to look good for it.

Women are “hosts” to fetuses, proclaimed Virginia Senator Steve Martin on Feb. 24, leading to intense debate over his word choice and views on abortion in general. Martin put himself at the center of a social media faux pas when he responded to a “Valentine’s day card” from the Virginia Pro-Choice Coalition which read, “All women deserve access to their full range of reproductive health options — including preventing unintentional pregnancies, raising healthy children, and choosing safe, legal abortion.”

Ladies and gentlemen of U.Va, your voice of reason has arrived. Fashion reason, that is. I’m the Fashion Jiminy Cricket you never knew you needed. I’m a normal person with an eye for the aesthetics of fashion. And the first item on my docket is the fashion degeneracy that are pajamas in public.

Entering the 2013 season, the No. 5 Virginia field hockey team faced a lot of uncertainty regarding its offense. With the graduation of Olympians Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese and the transfer of forward Rachel Sumfest, the Cavaliers were left without three of their top four goal scorers from the 2012 season. But thanks in large part to a nine-player deep Class of 2017 recruiting class, the Virginia attack now ranks second in the nation in goals scored.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—In the same way he might reminisce about his morning meal, Ben Olsen discusses defeat.
Though the 36-year-old former Virginia star and current D.C. United coach has just watched his last-place team commit a litany of self-inflicted maladies in an ugly 3-0 home loss to the Chicago Fire, his postmortem invokes measured optimism. He stops short of absolving his players of their defensive lapses and offensive profligacy but commends a lineup consisting of a mishmash of reserves and untested youngsters for battling the Fire’s first team.
“I think there’s going to be a lot of good stuff to build on,” Olsen said.
United, in this scenario, was the little guy gritting and toiling his way to a moral victory but falling short of perfection. Olsen can relate.
“I have a bit of a small man’s complex, I believe,” Olsen said.

Clad in a suit rather than his trademark sweater vest, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) addressed University students last Thursday evening in Old Cabell Hall. The University’s chapter of Young Americans for Freedom hosted the event. Bringing Santorum to Grounds was the fledgling group’s first major move. Since hosting its first interest meeting in April, YAF has spent most of its time on Facebook, where it posts racially objectionable cartoons and, in McCarthyesque fashion, identifies supposed Communists in Congress.
