All students interact with the academic component, of course. As for sports, some students engage deeply with Virginia Athletics, while others seldom cross paths with it. In the middle of that spectrum, however, is a set of students who say that their time at the University strengthened their preexisting but smaller relationship with sports.

But now, after a remarkable 2024 outdoor season at Virginia where he claimed a national title in the 800-meter, earned All-American First Team honors and set a personal best in the 800-meter final at the Olympic Trials, the fantasy of becoming a professional athlete has become a reality.

Acrisure Stadium is a great place for a night game. The stadium is packed, the lights are bright and the competition is fierce. Yet, amongst all the glory of the iconic venue, the Virginia football team left the venue in Pittsburgh, Pa., feeling like the best team around. With a 24-19 win against the No. 23 Panthers, the Cavaliers (5-4, 3-3 ACC) have snapped their three-game losing streak and will look to turn their season back around after getting their third comeback win after halftime this season. Multiple times in college, I’ve found myself on a blind date — an arrangement where I go out with someone, despite never having met them. These dates are usually organized by a mutual friend, who sees date functions or other University social events as the perfect opportunity for match-making. While these dates can turn out to be fun, they can start out awkwardly when neither person knows what to say. For anyone being set up on a blind date at the University, here are 10 questions to kickstart a conversation and make you and your date feel a little less like strangers.

Virginia field hockey just so happens to be ranked third-best nationally right now. To date, the Cavaliers boast a 10-1 record with high hopes entering an arduous stretch of ranked matchups. At the core of the Cavaliers’ success is junior midfielder Daniela Mendez-Trendler, who impresses on and off the field — in the classroom and beyond.

The first major event of the fall presidential campaign took place Sept. 10 with the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump — likely the only time these two candidates will debate before the election. Prior to the debate, The Cavalier Daily assembled an election focus group of undecided student voters to gauge their reactions throughout the election season. Now, just over a week after the debate, among the five participants present at the focus group’s first meeting, all five suggested Harris performed better than Trump in the debate, even if each candidates’ performance did not change their voting intention.

Virginia women’s soccer took its exclusion from the preseason top-25 rankings personally. Winners of their first seven games of the 2024 season, the No. 2 Cavaliers have outscored their opponents by a 19-1 margin — in the past four games, they have not allowed a single shot on goal. While Virginia’s non-conference excellence has established the team as a national championship contender, the upcoming challenge of the ACC season is what will decide the trajectory of their season.

Déjà vu washed over Scott Stadium as the skies opened up and a weather delay interrupted Virginia’s home opener for the second year in a row. But unlike last season’s post-thunderstorm implosion versus James Madison, the Cavaliers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) held on for a 34-13 victory over Richmond. The Spiders (0-1, 0-0 CAA) were outmatched throughout most of the game.

While starting a season off playing an away game might seem nerve-wracking to some, Virginia field hockey brought fire to their game in University Park, Pa. Friday versus Penn State. The Cavaliers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) clearly came ready to fight and did just that as they came out on top over the Nittany Lions (0-1, 0-0 Big 10) in a 2-1 victory.

Following a 2-0 win over Towson Thursday, Virginia women’s soccer continued its dominance at Klöckner Stadium with another 2-0 victory against Northwestern Sunday afternoon. Despite an identical score to Virginia’s season opener, Sunday’s game unfolded very differently. The Cavaliers fired on all cylinders against Towson, putting up 24 shots and 12 on target, but they mustered just nine total shots and one on target against Northwestern. However, by shutting out the Wildcats (1-1-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten), the Cavaliers (2-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) still have not given up a goal in the 2024 season.
