Virginia women’s soccer took its exclusion from the preseason top-25 rankings personally. Winners of their first seven games of the 2024 season, the No. 2 Cavaliers have outscored their opponents by a 19-1 margin — in the past four games, they have not allowed a single shot on goal. While Virginia’s non-conference excellence has established the team as a national championship contender, the upcoming challenge of the ACC season is what will decide the trajectory of their season.

Déjà vu washed over Scott Stadium as the skies opened up and a weather delay interrupted Virginia’s home opener for the second year in a row. But unlike last season’s post-thunderstorm implosion versus James Madison, the Cavaliers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) held on for a 34-13 victory over Richmond. The Spiders (0-1, 0-0 CAA) were outmatched throughout most of the game.

While starting a season off playing an away game might seem nerve-wracking to some, Virginia field hockey brought fire to their game in University Park, Pa. Friday versus Penn State. The Cavaliers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) clearly came ready to fight and did just that as they came out on top over the Nittany Lions (0-1, 0-0 Big 10) in a 2-1 victory.

Following a 2-0 win over Towson Thursday, Virginia women’s soccer continued its dominance at Klöckner Stadium with another 2-0 victory against Northwestern Sunday afternoon. Despite an identical score to Virginia’s season opener, Sunday’s game unfolded very differently. The Cavaliers fired on all cylinders against Towson, putting up 24 shots and 12 on target, but they mustered just nine total shots and one on target against Northwestern. However, by shutting out the Wildcats (1-1-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten), the Cavaliers (2-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) still have not given up a goal in the 2024 season.

Virginia women’s squash has the chance to be the strongest it has ever been following a successful season last year as the Cavaliers return the bulk of a rotation that finished ranked No. 4 in the country. My home had always been one place and one place only — Bucks County, Pa. The relationship I have with my home — one of feeling warm, safe, at ease and embraced — has only become amplified because of my time away from my Pennsylvania home and my family. Now, I am only in Bucks County for three and half months of the year, while the other eight and a half are spent in Charlottesville as a University student. However, time away from where I grew up, and more time in Charlottesville, is starting to make me realize that home is not defined by one place.
