Clemons Library will no longer operate 24 hours this semester and will now close at 2 a.m. on weekdays, aligning its schedule with the Edgar Shannon Library. Students say the change leaves them with fewer late-night study options, especially on weekends, when Shannon’s hours are particularly limited.

Fall tennis, for many players, is pretty simply about getting time on court. After summers that some spend playing tournaments to maximize their playing time and others spend at desk jobs or napping poolside, the flexibility that comes with the fall allows players to shake off rust, hone their craft and do their best to qualify for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in November.

The University Judiciary Committee is currently processing 16 cases, all of which pertain to individuals, and it closed its application Tuesday for its fall recruitment cycle. The Committee will be electing four new representatives — three from the College of Arts and Sciences and one from the School of Engineering — in accordance with the new referendum to reapportion the number of representatives to proportionally match the school populations.

No. 3 Virginia field hockey finally received a reprieve from their gauntlet of a schedule Sunday, playing its first unranked opponent after three straight ranked matchups to start the year. James Madison (4-3, 0-0, MAC) came to Charlottesville to face the undefeated Cavaliers (4-0, 0-0, ACC) and try to upset the powerhouse on their own field. Though the stats showed a dominant 4-1 victory for Virginia, with the Dukes being outshot by a whopping 20-5, the game was much closer. Until a late scoring avalanche from the Cavaliers in the fourth quarter, the margin was razor thin between the two squads.

The Board of Visitors’ Academic and Student Life Committee met Thursday to hear presentations from Interim Provost Brie Gertler, Vice President of Research Lori McMahon, and student participants in the Karsh Institute’s Civic Cornerstone Fellowship. The Committee also discussed the terminated research grants, as well as ongoing initiatives related to artificial intelligence.

The Board of Visitors Finance Committee met Friday to hear an annual report from the University Investment Management Company. The Committee also unanimously approved all seven action items on the agenda, including the University’s 6-year institutional plan, state budget requests and approval for major capital plans.

During Thursday’s meeting of the Board of Visitors’ Advancement Committee, Mark Luellen, senior vice president for external relations, reported that the University’s Honor the Future campaign had raised over $6.1 billion in donations at the time of its conclusion June 30. $2.3 billion of this money was directed to the University’s endowment.

After months of legal limbo, federal funds previously withheld by the Trump administration, including more than $1 million for Charlottesville and Albemarle County schools, have started to flow back into Charlottesville. In addition to public school funds, funding decisions for adult education, adult literacy and English acquisition programs were also reversed. Yet, regardless of the final status of the funds, the fragility generated by the lurching nature of these decisions only serves to further degrade Charlottesville’s educational institutions by forcing them to plan for a scenario in which the money never arrives.

Student Council representatives viewed the new Public Service Advisory Board website during Tuesday’s general body meeting which includes a guidebook for students to learn how to ethically serve at the University, centered around “the three R’s” —- reciprocity, respect and responsibility. The Council additionally provided updates regarding a clothing drive happening for the Cavalier Career Closet and heard the improved dining options at the University School of Law, which follows a resolution passed in March to increase the cafe hours.

Virginia volleyball held fans on the edges of their seats Saturday in a barnburner of a loss against Appalachian State. Tuesday, the Cavaliers (4-2, 0-0 ACC) lost again, but in a much different fashion. Virginia traveled to face Auburn for the first ever Showdown at the Net, a new NCAA women’s volleyball tournament. Both teams entered the competition 4-1, but the Tigers (5-1, 0-0 SEC) walked away with a dominant sweep, 25-17, 25-16, 25-21.
