Student Council representatives viewed the new Public Service Advisory Board website during Tuesday’s general body meeting which includes a guidebook for students to learn how to ethically serve at the University, centered around “the three R’s” —- reciprocity, respect and responsibility. The Council additionally provided updates regarding a clothing drive happening for the Cavalier Career Closet and heard the improved dining options at the University School of Law, which follows a resolution passed in March to increase the cafe hours.
Lily Dorathy, Council director of coalition engagement and fourth-year Batten and College student, spoke on the PSAB website and guidebook. She said that both resources aim to inform students on how to be an ethical student leader and that she spent the summer preparing for its launch. The PSAB is specifically aimed at bringing together student volunteers and Dorathy said this website includes necessary student training.
“The 45-page guidebook dives into knowing yourself, knowing your community, knowing your next step,” Dorathy said. “[These are] the steps we want students to go through before they get engaged with service, to make sure [their work] is ethical.”
A second announcement made at Tuesday’s meeting was in regard to the ongoing clothing drive for the Cavalier Career Closet. The Council announced the launch of the CCC during the general body meeting August 26, and it is located on the first floor of Newcomb Hall and allows any University student to take business attire for themselves at no cost.
Micah Andrews, Council chief of support and access services and third-year College student, said during the meeting the closet is currently accepting donations from professors through a drive in Madison Hall that began Tuesday and will end September 23.
Third-year Law School Representative Kasey Michaud additionally provided an update about dining options at the Law School. In March, Michaud sponsored a resolution to improve the dining options from the single cafe available — the Sidley Austin Cafe — which was open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Michaud said in March that there was a lack of food options for students during the hours the cafe was closed.
Michaud reported a 24-hour minimarket has opened at the School of Law that serves a rotating collection of food — including hamburgers, sandwiches and protein shakes. He added that the cafe is now open until 2 p.m. and said that has been beneficial to students who have classes ending in the early afternoon.
“[The minimarket] is a big change — people have actually been using it too, stuff in there is selling out,” Michaud said.
Following all updates, a resolution was unanimously passed by Council representatives to approve directors to the committees of the Council Organizations Branch. The Organizations Branch is responsible for supporting student organizations on Grounds through funding and resource development.
The resolution was sponsored by Michael Mitchell, Council vice president for organizations and third-year Commerce student, who noted his excitement in these incoming directors and pointed out that three of them are returning.
“I’m super excited,” Mitchell said. “[There are] a lot of returning [directors] which makes me really happy.”
Third-year Commerce student Minseo Kim and fourth-year College student Scott Dunn will be co-directors of the appropriations committee and third-year College student Olympia Sauerwein and third-year College student Forrest Sun will be co-directors of the CIO consultants committee. Fourth-year Batten student Kailyn Dickerson and fourth-year College student Schyler Panagsagan will be co-directors of the organizations recognition committee and graduate Commerce student Isaac Glasser will be director of the board of audit committee.
Additionally, general member applications for Student Council are open until 9 a.m. Monday. All University students are eligible to apply via a Microsoft form linked on the homepage of the Council website. General members are responsible for completing tasks set by the Council vice president for administration, who is graduate public health student Princess Wuraola Olubuse-Omisore for the 2025-26 academic year.
Student Council will reconvene for a regularly scheduled general body meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
