Virginia women’s basketball hosted Virginia Tech at John Paul Jones Arena Sunday afternoon, looking to claim a series sweep. However, the result was far from it —- and instead was a disappointing rivalry loss that moved the Cavaliers (12-13, 4-9 ACC) to a subpar 12th in the ACC standings. The Hokies (16-8, 7-6 ACC) handedly defeated Virginia 87-62 in what was the Cavaliers’ fifth straight loss at home.

It was not quite the kind of basketball fans in John Paul Jones Arena might have been used to seeing. Ironically, on the newly-declared Tony Bennett Day, Virginia’s win over Georgia Tech came via a fast-paced, back-and-forth shootout, not one of the plodding affairs typical of most of Bennett’s teams.

After the 2025-26 on-Grounds housing selection period came to an end Jan. 31, many students were left with less-than-ideal housing options. Changes in the process forced many groups to split last-minute and led so me to turn to more costly off-Grounds options. For some students, most on-Grounds housing options filled up before every student had their assigned selection time.

The Super Bowl’s iconic halftime show — once an intermission of college marching bands — now carries the weight of America’s entertainment expectations. It forces artists to distill their vast discographies into a grand spectacle of just 15 minutes. Super Bowl LIX’s showdown Sunday in New Orleans between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs will be bridged by famed Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar, who has the task of synthesizing two decades of his hip-hop excellence into his second — but first headlining — Super Bowl halftime appearance.

The University Transit Service has made recent efforts to improve bus safety and enhance accessibility for UTS OnDemand, a free van service that shuttles University community members between locations after bus hours end. Goals for this initiative include increasing the accuracy of wait times and increasing the number of buses running throughout the day. Tucked inside a small storefront on the Downtown Mall is Café Frank, a Franco-Italian restaurant founded by local chef José de Brito. My date and I had the pleasure of dining there during Charlottesville Restaurant Week, taking advantage of their $45 three-course meal deal. The restaurant serves dishes that have been meticulously conceived and prepared, leaving patrons to enjoy delicious food that is purposeful in its simplicity. Café Frank is well worth a visit, but the steep price of their menu makes the restaurant best suited for special occasions.

Memorial Gymnasium closed Dec. 6 for renovations, and during the first month of the semester, students have reported frustrations with wait times and difficulty reserving athletic spaces. The current renovations are targeted at improving comfort and accessibility and making necessary maintenance upgrades. Despite these renovations, outdoor recreation spaces around Memorial Gymnasium that are used for intramural sports and soccer — like the outdoor courts and Carr’s Hill Field — will remain open.

Freshman Rafael Jódar fired his second serve, the game tied at 40. There was some spin on it — just enough to pull the opponent, the No. 3-ranked singles player in the nation, off his spot and give Jódar the advantage he needed. A quick rally ensued before Jódar put the ball away, pumped his fist and celebrated his win with a triumphant shout.
