Set after set would result in a Cavalier kill. Various outside hitters would thunderously slam the ball into opposition territory. But before the kill, a strong play was almost always attributed to the set-up, always done by one player — senior setter Ashley Le.
With the NIL era of college sports in full swing, there are a myriad of unknowns. Questions have arisen about how athletes will balance sponsorship deals with school responsibilities, how schools will manage compliance and fairness and how potential roster cuts will impact team dynamics. One thing is for sure, however — money matters, particularly in women’s basketball, where there is enormous revenue potential, as well as a long history of low investment.
In 2024, several Virginia women’s sports programs had high-quality seasons. To name a few examples, softball went 15-9 in ACC play — a significant improvement from a record of 8-16 the year prior. Volleyball also improved its overall record to 21-11 after an 11-17 season in 2023.
As expected, Virginia football has had an aggressive first week in the transfer portal, acquiring five transfers. With 16 of his players departing via the portal and several more graduating, Coach Tony Elliott faces considerable work in retooling the roster.
As the calendar prepares to turn, it is time to reflect on another year of Virginia sports. A few pieces of hardware and several momentous victories highlighted an eventful 2024 for the University’s athletic programs, which achieved national success and even represented the University on the world stage at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

If something, somewhere along the rollercoaster of this Virginia men’s soccer season, tickled your memory, there’s probably a good reason why. The season featured the same early-season struggles, early-October resurgence and high NCAA Tournament seed as the previous two. And the same conclusion, a loss at home to an unseeded team.
After battling through two intense sets, seniors Melodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky found themselves just a 10-point tiebreaker away from an NCAA doubles title. Having already prevailed in four three-set matches during the tournament, they knew exactly what to do — trust their fundamentals and each other. Collard and Chervinsky did just that Nov. 24, securing the first NCAA doubles title in Virginia women’s tennis history.
In what, at first sight, appeared to be a typical home match for Virginia volleyball — the same opening warmup playlist, the same familiar tossing of small foam volleyballs into the stands after announcing the starting lineup, the same dedicated fanbase — the Cavaliers (21-11, 11-9 ACC) played what was far from a typical contest. Facing off against Saint John’s in the second round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship, Virginia hosted a match in a postseason national tournament for the first time in program history Sunday night.
Sunday evening, Virginia volleyball gathered to watch the NCAA selection show, which announced the 64 teams selected to compete in the NCAA Division I women’s volleyball tournament. The Cavaliers, who went 21-10 in the regular season and a respectable 11-9 in the ACC, were on the cusp of their first postseason appearance since 1999.
In its last match of the regular season, Virginia volleyball faced off against Boston College at Memorial Gymnasium. This Saturday match was the second battle between these ACC foes — the first of which was a win Oct. 27 — and also the second time the match went to five sets. In this rematch, the Cavaliers (21-10, 11-10 ACC) lost to the Eagles (15-7, 8-12 ACC) in five sets, particularly struggling in the third and fifth sets.
Over the past four years, regardless of their knowledge of the sport, spectators at Scott Stadium took notice of number 20 constantly flying around the field. “Tackle made by Jonas Sanker” rang over the public address system eight to 10 times in a given home game — it was as much a gameday staple as “The Good Old Song.”

Women’s lacrosse is the newest benefactor of a momentous era for women’s sports. The Premier Lacrosse League announced Nov. 13 the creation of the Women's Lacrosse League, which will be composed of four teams and join Athletes Unlimited, founded in 2020, as the second professional women’s lacrosse league.
Despite the snow that had lingered on the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course earlier in the week, Virginia cross country raced on snow-free terrain in Madison, Wis. Saturday morning at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. The Cavalier men placed 14th while the women placed 21st, both one-spot improvements from last season.
Football makes money — and quite a lot of it. It is widely known that football is the most profitable college sport by an astronomically large margin. And because football is the cash cow of college sports, having a program that attracts fans and donors is essential for helping to fund programs that make less money such as tennis or swimming and diving. Football needs to succeed so that other programs have funding.
At Memorial Gymnasium Friday, Virginia volleyball faced No. 3 Louisville. The Cardinals (23-3, 15-1 ACC) were on a six-game win streak and continued their elite play by defeating the Cavaliers (20-8, 10-7 ACC). It was a hard-fought battle from Virginia though, who took Louisville to four sets after winning in the third set. This was the first time the Cavaliers won a set against a top-five team in program history.
No. 4 seed Virginia women’s soccer faced No. 5 seed Wisconsin in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Friday in Irvine, Calif. Neither team scored in regulation or either of the two overtime periods, and after four rounds of penalty kicks, the Cavaliers (13-5-0, 5-5-0) were eliminated by the Badgers (10-5-5, 5-3-3 Big Ten) 0-0 (4-2).
Three weeks ago, junior Gary Martin had an incredible run at the ACC Cross Country Championships, producing an event record time of 22:17.6 to claim Virginia’s first individual ACC men’s title since 2010. Last week, Virginia won the team event at the NCAA Southeast Regional on its way to qualifying for the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Nothing says “early season basketball” like two undefeated teams facing off at a neutral site somewhere very far away. Last November, Virginia took on Wisconsin and West Virginia in Fort Myers, Fla. This year, the Cavaliers (3-0, 0-0 ACC) are going even further from John Paul Jones Arena to take on No. 11 Tennessee in Nassau, Bahamas to open the Continental Tire Baha Mar Championship Thursday at 9:30 p.m. on CBS. The Volunteers (4-0, 0-0 SEC) will present a great challenge to a Virginia squad that has performed well but has yet to face elite competition.
