With a team score of 13-under this week, the Cavaliers thoroughly dismantled the layout of the University Club in Baton Rouge, La. and, in doing so, have fought their way into the NCAA Championships beginning Friday in Carlsbad, Calif. Virginia entered this week’s competition ranked No. 13 in the May 3 NCAA rankings and sought to prove themselves to that point following what was an up-and-down fifth-place performance at the ACC Championships.

Four years ago on move in day, I arrived at the University with a million questions racing through my mind. As my parents finished helping me unpack and left, I sat back and pondered, a mix of excitement and nerves. Could I actually live on my own? Yes! Could I find a community and navigate learning amid COVID-19? Yes! Would the men’s basketball team build on the momentum of the 2019 National Championship and continue to shine in March while I’m here? Um …

When “Down Under” by Men at Work plays at Disharoon Park, Virginia fans know that a big play is certain to happen. The walkup song of graduate catcher Jacob Ference signals a massive at-bat for Virginia and consequently imposes a sense of fear on opposing pitchers. Defying preseason expectations, Ference plays a pivotal role in an electric Cavalier offense — and a generally successful 2024 campaign.

Reeling after three consecutive losses to conclude the regular season, Virginia men’s lacrosse is entering the ACC Tournament void of momentum. It does not help that the Cavaliers will, again, be faced with No. 1 Notre Dame — whom Virginia lost to in the national semifinal in 2023 and failed to enact revenge upon Saturday, falling 11-9 in the regular-season finale.

As Name, Image and Likeness and recruiting restrictions continue to change amidst calls to properly compensate collegiate athletes, especially those in high-earning sports, a new law signed April 18 allows Virginia schools to compensate players for NIL rights. The University played a major role in drafting the bill, which takes effect July 1. House Bill 1505 is indeed groundbreaking and will largely shift the NIL landscape in Virginia, but Athletic Director Carla Williams should be cautious with this sudden and unprecedented change.

The eighth edition of the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash — a year-long competition between Virginia and Virginia Tech that includes 24 matchups across 22 sports — was decided last weekend at the women’s golf ACC Championship as the Cavaliers shot 17 under the Hokies’ weekend finish of 873. Each school is awarded a point when they come out on top over their rival — some sports will face off twice during the season, meaning those games are worth 0.5 points each. The first team to accumulate 11 points is crowned the winner. This final triumph over Virginia Tech marked the last point needed to end the contest and lock in Virginia’s win.

ACC Co-Coach of the Year Sonia LaMonica’s debut season with the Cavaliers has certainly lived up to preseason expectations. Her Virginia squad is currently ranked ninth nationally and is a formidable force against any opponent. A relentless offense led by graduate attack Katia Carnevale and senior attack Morgan Schwab is essential — but equally important is sophomore goalkeeper Mel Josephson, who put up a masterful performance in a massive victory against then-No.3 Boston College. Fueled by a team-first mindset and a versatile skill set, Josephson will be much-needed for a successful postseason push.

No. 2 Virginia men’s tennis traveled to Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. to compete as the first seed in the ACC Tournament from Friday to Sunday. The Cavaliers (22-5, 12-0 ACC) were hoping to earn their fourth conference title in a row — however, they had some tough competition. After defeating Clemson (14-14, 4-8 ACC) and Duke (18-9, 9-3 ACC), Virginia ultimately fell to Florida State (21-7, 7-5 ACC) in the ACC Championship. The defeat was the first conference loss for the Cavaliers since 2020.

For the fourth time in its history, No. 4 Virginia women’s tennis made it to the ACC Championship match, defeating No. 28 Notre Dame and No. 23 Florida State en route to its finals appearance. Unfortunately, the two-seed Cavaliers (22-4, 12-1 ACC) could not overcome the one-seeded No. 5 North Carolina team that defeated them earlier this month. The Cavaliers, who shared the regular-season title with the Tar Heels (22-3, 12-1 ACC) with a 12-1 conference record, bested both the seven-seed Fighting Irish (17-9, 7-6 ACC) and the three-seed Seminoles (16-8, 9-4 ACC) 4-0 but were outcompeted by North Carolina, falling 1-4.

Nobody has to mention the last time Virginia men’s lacrosse played Notre Dame. The thought of it just lingers in everyone’s minds — the late lead that evaporated and the four Fighting Irish goals in four minutes to send Virginia trundling home. Now, though, a rematch is on the horizon, an inescapable narrative swirling around Saturday’s charged rematch.

Last month at the 2024 NCAA Championship, the Virginia women’s swimming and diving team secured its fourth straight national title — that achievement only extended the dynasty the program has been building for years. While they aren’t alone in winning four consecutive championships — Texas and Stanford won five straight titles in 1988 and 1996, respectively — Virginia may soon join those ranks in 2025. Made possible by top-notch recruiting, the program remains at the top of the sport despite constant key losses in personnel.

This weekend, all three will officially be inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

For only the second time in program history, Virginia women’s tennis are ACC Regular Season co-champions thanks to a pair of back-to-back home victories this weekend against No. 19 Miami and No. 23 Florida State. The Cavaliers (20-3, 12-1 ACC) bested the Hurricanes (10-6, 8-4 ACC) in a dominant 6-1 victory that was played despite windy conditions and a rain delay. They then took on the Seminoles (15-7, 9-4 ACC) Sunday, closing out the regular season on a victorious 4-2 high note. Virginia will share the regular season title with No. 4 North Carolina, as both teams are 12-1 in conference play.

While many Virginia men’s basketball fans have yet to get over this season’s disheartening debacle, it is time for Cavalier supporters to turn their collective attention to former members of the program who are in the professional ranks. After remaining undefeated in ACC play for over a month, No. 4 Virginia women’s tennis suffered its first conference loss Friday at the hands of No. 6 North Carolina. Although the Cavaliers (18-3, 10-1 ACC) defeated the Tar Heels (16-3, 10-1 ACC) earlier this season at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, they faltered this weekend, losing 4-1, and lost sole possession of best conference record. However, Virginia bounced back quickly Sunday in another top-25 matchup, besting No. 20 Duke, 4-3. The Cavaliers were determined to grind out victory, defeating the Blue Devils (13-7, 6-5 ACC), despite multiple competitive tiebreakers.

Virginia men’s basketball lost by 25 points March 19 against Colorado State in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers bowed out to No. 13 seed Furman in the opening round a season prior, missed the tournament entirely in 2022 and and fell to No. 13 seed Ohio in the first round in 2021. The program hasn’t won a game in the “Big Dance” since its national title run in 2019, leaving questions surrounding Coach Tony Bennett’s future in Charlottesville.
