The No. 8 Virginia baseball team played Towson Wednesday night, but you may not have known that from a quick look at the field. With their school’s name blacked out on their uniforms in protest of a recent decision to cut the program, the Tigers likely played at Davenport for the final time. Behind a solid start from freshman Trey Oest, the Cavaliers closed out the series in impressive fashion, taking a 7-1 win.

An 18-inning performance at third base would be taxing enough for most players, but for sophomore Nick Howard, his job was not yet over. Less than 24 hours after Saturday’s double-header win, the sophomore took the mound as then-No. 8 Virginia’s starter in Sunday’s finale, firing 4.1 innings and batting seventh to lead a crucial sweep of NC State.

Junior guard Ataira Franklin was named to the All-ACC first team Monday, her first career all-conference selection. In a separate vote, the ACC coaches named Franklin to their All-ACC second team. Franklin led Virginia in scoring during the regular season and started all but one of the team’s 29 games.

At some point this past weekend, coach Brian O’Connor asserted the seemingly invincible No. 19 Virginia pitching staff would need some help from the offense. In a four-game home stand it was the overpowering Cavalier offense that propelled the team through the weekend, sweeping two games each against Harvard and Bucknell to remain undefeated on the season.

Most freshmen athletes would be happy to simply get a chance to make it out on the field, but for pitcher Brandon Waddell, it was clear that he would want more. The lefty was stunning in his home debut, striking out 15 batters in six innings in a 15-0 blowout of Toledo at Davenport Field Friday. His performance keyed a strong weekend for the No. 25 Cavaliers as they rolled over Toledo 5-0 Saturday and 6-3 Sunday.
