Over the past year at The Cavalier Daily, I have had the opportunity to cover and write about some of the more exciting sports events at the University. I've also had the opportunity to report on some sporting events that made me lose a lot of respect for specific athletes, schools or sports. But as my sportswriting career comes to a close today, I realized I haven't had the chance to talk about some of the more ridiculous sports events that occurred during my term. So, in a very fitting way to finish my sportswriting career, I've come up with the top five sports-related stories that have made me go "Hmmmm."

It's a familiar story: girl loves boy, boy loves girl, but boy and girl are also both in love with someone else. In the case of "Love and Basketball," written and directed by Gina Prince-Blythewood, however, the "someone else" is a something else: basketball.

Cavalier basketball fans tend to look on former Virginia coach Jeff Jones with mixed feelings. On the one hand, he led Virginia to five NCAA Tournament berths and the 1992 NIT title. But on the other, he is held responsible for the fiascoes that surround former Virginia recruit Melvin Whitaker and former players Scott Johnson, Darryl Presley and Courtney Alexander and the NCAA infractions that current coach Pete Gillen is still dealing with.

The Virginia women's lacrosse team has a tough couple weeks ahead of it as it faces off against five top 20 opponents. But last night at the University Hall Turf Field, the Cavaliers were able to forget about the rough stretch ahead of them and enjoy a 15-3 victory over No. 20 William & Mary.

It's hard to believe the ACC regular season is now behind us and the 2000 ACC Tournament kicks off tomorrow night in Charlotte. For many reasons, in my four years at Virginia, this tournament is the one I've been looking forward to most.

Duke's Cameron Crazies are known for toeing the line with their taunts to opposing players.

At the beginning of the ACC season, I picked North Carolina to finish first in the ACC. For some reason, that doesn't make sense to me now. I thought UNC was a relatively deep team with a tradition of excellence. Considering Duke's preseason state, I was certain the Tar Heels could take on the Blue Devils for the ACC crown.

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--Virginia Coach Pete Gillen is used to having his team play a good defensive game. He's been known to say that the defense sparks the offense and he's also been known to praise his players' defensive efforts -- sometimes even more than their offense. But in last night's 91-79 loss to No. 25 Maryland, all that Gillen could say was that the Virginia defense fell apart.
