In the past, Virginia fans been criticized as some of the worst in the ACC. They don't cheer loudly enough, don't come to enough games and don't stay to the end if the Cavs are losing. And while it would be nice to have all of the Cavalier fans up on their feet until the final buzzer, the Virginia faithful are nowhere close to being the worst fans in the Conference.

NEW YORK, N.Y.--On paper, the Virginia basketball game against St. John's looked like it was going to be an even match-up. While St. John's had stellar players like Erick Barkley and Bootsy Thornton, they also were lacking Ron Artest and Tyrone Grant, last year's stars. The Cavaliers, on the other hand, had a loaded bench and the size advantage.

If one thing can be said about the Virginia men's basketball team this season, it's that the team definitely remembers and has learned from their tough losses last year. Virginia tailback Thomas Jones and center John St. Clair each received All-American honors last week. St. Clair was named to the All-American second team by Football News, and Jones received honors from Football News and the Football Writers Association of America, while also being named to the Walter Camp 1999 All-America team -- the nation's oldest collegiate all-star team.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- After Saturday's 34-30 victory over Maryland, the focal point of many seemed to be the thrilling scoring drive that ended with 26 seconds left and gave Virginia the victory. Dan Ellis looked great under pressure, directing the Cavaliers down the field with little time on the clock and no timeouts, but the praise after the game ignored one crucial fact: The Cavs were very lucky to get their seventh win Saturday.

At virtually every Virginia football game, there are many Cavalier fans toting signs in attempts to get their faces on TV. But during Saturday's game against Buffalo, a non-televised game, the usual abundance of signs was nowhere to be found. Instead, there was one large sign hanging from the top of the student section of Scott Stadium that said very simply, "TJ for President and Heisman."

Tonight at U-Hall, the Virginia men's basketball team will start the season off in an exhibition game against the Australian All-Stars. By the end of next week, most ACC teams will be preparing to start a season, which, unlike all years in recent memory, does not have a clear favorite.
