For the third year in a row, the Cavaliers have an NFL Draft selection. Graduate receiver Malik Washington — a first team All-ACC selection scooped up in the sixth round by Miami — will proudly represent Virginia in the professionals. Looking at Cavalier connections, Washington is the 189th former Cavalier in NFL history. He is also the first Virginia player selected by the Dolphins since Terry Kirby back in 1993.

The works of William Shakespeare have been performed for hundreds of years, with endless variations on modernizing the themes and setting. This weekend, Shakespeare on the Lawn will deliver a new rendition of “Much Ado About Nothing,” set in a southern country club — and the production is a surefire hit. The Cavalier Daily was warmly welcomed to a rehearsal April 17, where the players and production team presented the fascinating tale.

ACC Co-Coach of the Year Sonia LaMonica’s debut season with the Cavaliers has certainly lived up to preseason expectations. Her Virginia squad is currently ranked ninth nationally and is a formidable force against any opponent. A relentless offense led by graduate attack Katia Carnevale and senior attack Morgan Schwab is essential — but equally important is sophomore goalkeeper Mel Josephson, who put up a masterful performance in a massive victory against then-No.3 Boston College. Fueled by a team-first mindset and a versatile skill set, Josephson will be much-needed for a successful postseason push.

Craig Littlepage, Monica Wright Rogers and Chris Long are forever University legends. Littlepage served in the athletic department for 35 years — plus 9 years in various roles with the men’s basketball program — while the latter two inductees each enjoyed lengthy professional careers in the WNBA and NFL, respectively. This weekend, all three will officially be inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

Their kicks are fast as lightning, their ascension to dominance is inspiring and their performance is electric and breathtaking. Under the leadership of Markus Lin, outgoing president of Virginia club wushu and second-year Engineering student, wushu is a strong representative of excellence for amateur University athletics across all levels of competition.

Virginia men’s basketball continues to go through another period of uncertainty. Redshirt freshman forward Leon Bond III has already departed via the transfer portal, and redshirt junior guard Dante Harris officially left Friday. Senior guard Reece Beekman and sophomore guard Ryan Dunn — both of whom officially declared for the draft Wednesday and Tuesday, respectively — are probable NBA Draft selections, and the Cavaliers could still lose more contributors to the transfer portal. Many are frustrated with Coach Tony Bennett’s program — punctuated by a blowout loss to Colorado State in the First Four — but there is cause for hope. Talented underclassmen are on the rise, especially freshman guard Elijah Gertrude.

Some of the best athletes to play for the University are homegrown talents from Charlottesville. Graduate attackman Connor Shellenberger of men’s lacrosse and freshman guard Kymora Johnson of women’s basketball instantly come to mind as leaders of their respective programs. Completing a trifecta of local legends, enter Henry Ford — who has been playing baseball in Charlottesville for over a decade.

In a strange 2023-2024 season, full of inconsistency, graduate forward Jake Groves has been one of the most important components for a streaky Cavalier offense. Standing at 6’9” and 211 lbs., he does not fit the build of a stereotypical ACC big man — yet he has logged most of his minutes at the center position.

In a season full of solid wins and ghastly losses, the Cavaliers (21-8, 12-6 ACC) seem to have found their path to victory. When Coach Tony Bennett’s squad scores 70 or more points in a game, the team is a perfect 10-0. Against the Eagles (15-13, 6-11 ACC), Virginia lit up the scoreboard through a stream of three-point shots and came away with the 72-68 win.

Graduate running back Mike Hollins was honored as the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year — one of the most prestigious awards in college football — Thursday evening in Frisco, Texas.

With a seemingly unlimited transfer portal, contemporary college football is volatile. There are now multiple transfer portal windows, multiple national signing days and a constant whirlwind of change. Past the chaos though, there is a clear silver lining — a program can go from rags to riches in less than 24 hours. With his latest wide receiver signings, Coach Tony Elliott has struck gold.

The University is home to some of the best coaches in the world. Lars Tiffany, Andres Pedroso and Todd DeSorbo are regarded as arguably the very best in their respective sports. The Cavaliers also boast a handful of other prestigious coaches, though, and one of them teaches mechanical engineering in Olsson Hall.

Hired in 2022 to resurrect a below average program, Coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton has established a culture of arduous discipline from her first day in Charlottesville. Virginia had long been a conference bottomfeeder, drifting into mediocrity after the legendary tenure of former coach Debbie Ryan and her multiple Final Four appearances. However, the culture is rapidly changing for the better. While some may be unsatisfied with the current state of the program, patience is a necessity when trying to overcome years of futility. Agugua-Hamilton, a Herndon, Va. native, is creating tangible progress that will require multiple seasons to manifest in full.

Selected 159th overall in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Dontayvion Wicks was not receiving as much interest from professional teams as implied from his illustrious Virginia career. Wicks owned the Cavalier single-season receiving record with 1,203 yards before graduate student Malik Washington topped that mark in 2023. Wicks also had 9 touchdowns in that 2021 season and started a career trend of generating big plays at a clip of 21.1 yards per catch.

After two years with the program, Virginia football Coach Tony Elliott has amassed a 6-16 record, with only three wins in conference play. It should be noted that Elliott has faced perhaps the toughest two seasons of any coach in the United States, with the murder of three teammates scarring the 2022 season and causing the final two games to be canceled.

After a promising back half of the season, Virginia football ended 2023 on a sour note Saturday in a 55-17 loss to Virginia Tech. As the year comes to a close, The Cavalier Daily’s two football beat writers take a holistic look at where the Cavaliers stand and what to expect going into 2024.

According to David McArthur, director of public relations at the University of Louisville Health, sixth-year running back Perris Jones underwent spine surgery at the UofL Hospital after receiving emergency care from the UofL Health Sports Medicine team during the game Nov. 9. He then went through physical and occupational therapy at Frazier Rehabilitation Institute. After 19 days, he was deemed healthy enough to travel Tuesday.

Virginia football returned home to Scott Stadium Saturday and proceeded to play its most complete game of the season, outlasting Duke 30-27. The Cavaliers (3-8, 2-5 ACC) never trailed in the game and showed the potential of a young but talented roster in the victory over the Blue Devils (6-5, 3-4 ACC).

For arguably the first time since the season-opening loss against Tennessee, Virginia football was outclassed against Georgia Tech. The Cavaliers (2-7, 1-4 ACC) fell victim to a laundry list of injuries against the Yellow Jackets (5-4, 4-2 ACC), namely senior starting quarterback Tony Muskett going down and forcing freshman Anthony Colandrea to enter the game and therefore burn his redshirt, which also affected Virginia’s strategy given the stylistic differences between the two players. Rebounding against No. 11 Louisville will be extremely difficult, but Coach Tony Elliott and his squad have proved they are capable of taking down this level of opponent already this season, hoping to enact a similar fate on the Cardinals (8-1, 5-1 ACC) as then-No. 10 North Carolina.
