After bedlam surrounding University President Jim Ryan’s resignation, some faculty members convened Monday to ask questions and share comments with each other. The meeting operated under the Chatham House Rule, meaning that The Cavalier Daily was granted permission to attend the 90-minute session under the conditions that no faculty member would be attributed by name or departmental affiliation.

Chris Pollard, suit-clad and confident, did not enact some grand stop-and-stare entrance moment. He entered subtly. But when he first walked into the Jim Rutrough Club Lounge at Disharoon Park, he stopped to shake someone’s hand. Then he did it again and again, shaking the hand of everyone he encountered on his way to the podium. It took multiple minutes.

A new era of Virginia baseball was made official Tuesday, as Chris Pollard, formerly the head coach of Duke from 2013-2025, was named the sixteenth head coach in Virginia baseball history, and the successor to former Coach Brian O’Connor. The leader of a longtime ACC foe, Pollard is certainly a noteworthy hire. But the decision to hire Pollard goes far beyond the fact that he is a proven winner.

Director of Athletics Carla Williams announced Tuesday that Virginia baseball has hired Duke Coach Chris Pollard as its new head coach. Pollard is also bringing his full coaching staff with him, according to Monty Taylor of College Baseball Central.

Sunday night, Coach Brian O’Connor was named the head coach at Mississippi State as confirmed through a team message shared with The Cavalier Daily. It was, to many, a shocking move. Many couldn’t help but think of the fact that Virginia recently lost another legendary coach, Tony Bennett of men’s basketball, just eight months ago to retirement.

Coach Brian O’Connor is leaving Virginia baseball after 22 seasons and heading to Mississippi State, according to sources close to the team who asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

The NCAA released the 2025 NCAA Baseball Tournament bracket Monday, and Virginia was not among the teams selected for the first time since 2019. With a 32-18 record and 16-11 mark in ACC play, the Cavaliers did not impress the committee enough to earn a spot.

In a late-inning explosion to conclude game one of Virginia’s final series against Virginia Tech Thursday, the Cavaliers stamped their authority — something that they have only recently resuscitated amidst what has been an excellent stretch to close out the regular season. However, from the outset of game two Friday, the Cavaliers (31-17, 15-11 ACC) appeared uninspired and despondent. The result was a 5-4 loss to the Hokies (30-23, 12-17 ACC) that ultimately felt more like an inverted variation of the previous night’s result.

For those who have not followed Virginia baseball this season, 2025 can be summarized pretty easily. The team was ranked No. 2 in the national preseason poll, proceeded to stumble into a heinously long absence from the rankings entirely and was on the verge of missing the postseason for the first time since 2019. Now, things have changed.

Following an electric three-game winning streak in midweek games across the last fortnight, the Cavaliers looked to continue their late-season resurgence in their return to conference play Friday night against Miami. Virginia (28-16, 12-10 ACC), which entered the matchup in Baseball America’s “Next Four Out” designation for the upcoming NCAA Tournament, was in dire need of a victory.

Virginia put up double-digit runs on the scoreboard for the 16th time in 2025, as the Cavaliers incinerated the Tigers (19-31, 9-12 Colonial Athletic Association) 19-1.

From the starting horn to the finish line, she and her Cavaliers blazed their way to a national title in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Walsh anchored the final leg and led Virginia to finish a full 2.62 seconds ahead of second place Tennessee.

If Ryan Nelson was walking down the street, it would not be difficult to spot him. Nelson checks in at 6-foot-6 and 325 pounds and is a powerful offensive lineman — one who starred at Virginia from 2018 to 2021 and now protects the quarterback’s blind side for the Michigan Panthers of the United Football League. His hulkish stature may be one of the first things people notice. But, if you look closer, it is Nelson’s tattoos that stand out — details that tell the story of his family and his life.

To all who enjoy the popular food item, pizza feels normal. Pizza is consistent. Pizza can be easily replicated across various restaurants and cultures. However, some types of pizza are wildly controversial. Hawaiian pizza, green pizza — and yes, squared pizza — are rather hit-or-miss.

To date, Virginia’s performance in the 2025 season has not met the expectations that being ranked No. 2 in the preseason brought. The team has been wildly inconsistent, and has spent the last several weeks unranked. The question then becomes, who are the real Cavaliers? Is this team the one that had hopes of a third straight College World Series or the team that fails to maintain a streak of success?
