Virginia House bill caps student athletics fees

The House of Delegates passed a bill on Friday, Jan 23 which will cap the percentage of student fees supporting athletics in all Virginia higher-level-education institutions. House Bill 1897 — sponsored by Del. Kirk Cox, R-Colonial Heights — requires schools to limit student fees funding their athletic department budgets.

Ragged Mountain Running Shop organizes year-long marathon

Ragged Mountain Running Shop is currently organizing a marathon, dubbed the C-VILLE-athon, to take place over a year. Co-sponsored with the C-Ville Weekly, the C-VILLE-athon will consist of 34 non-profit races held around Charlottesville, to benefit local causes. Events include the Fourth Year 5K and the Charlottesville Ten Miler.

Route 29 solutions spur community debate

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s planned highway improvements along the Charlottesville and Albemarle portions of Route 29 — $84 million worth of projects — have sparked a debate in the local community over construction impacts.

Alumni speak out against Boys Bid Night restrictions

National sorority presidents requested National Panhellenic Conference sororities with University charters refrain from participating in the 2015 Boys Bid Night last Saturday in a move which generated discontent and confusion from alumni and sorority members.

University removes old Rotunda capitals

The last of the Rotunda’s old marble column capitals were removed Friday afternoon to make room for the installation of new, recrafted capitals. The first 10 new capitals are expected to arrive in the United States from Carrara, Italy in the next few weeks. The last six are expected in the spring.

Virginia House bills seek constitutional convention

Both branches of the Virginia Legislature voted on resolutions on Tuesday calling for a constitutional convention and subsequent amendments to the United States Constitution. The resolutions seek to invoke Constitutional Article V, which states that amendments to the Constitution may be proposed if resolutions for a convention are passed by two-thirds of states.
