With 116 active cases of COVID-19 already in the University community, students have mixed feelings about the safety of returning to Grounds next week.
Virginia statute (§ 23.1-400) mandates that a “religious or political student organization” may determine membership based on commitment to “the organization’s religious or political mission.”
The directive prompted a lawsuit from Harvard College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The United States alleges that between 2009 and 2017, the University used federal grant money to purchase certain entities at a discount or rebate, but did not return the value of those savings to the federal government

The decision comes after years of advocacy by undocumented students and allies who have pushed the University to matriculate undocumented students and provide financial aid and support.
In response to “input from faculty and students,” University Provost Liz Magill has added a “general credit” grade to what was previously understood to be a credit/no credit system.
