The University has developed several integral traditions over the years that every fourth-year student is obligated to participate in. In fact, these traditions are secret graduation requirements, so if you do not complete them, you won’t even be allowed to graduate. Believe me, if you walk across that stage without completing all the traditions, there will be consequences — to be revealed at the end of this lovely article. If you aren’t a fourth-year, you can stop reading now. But if you are a fourth-year, firstly I apologize, and secondly please keep reading for your own health and safety.

According to the International Studies Office, study abroad is essential in “preparing students for the challenges of the global world.” Given its importance, study abroad should be easily accessible to all students. In reality, however, study abroad is less than accessible when students wish to transfer study abroad credits to count toward their major or minor at the University — something which must happen for all non-University study abroad programs. The ISO has delegated the responsibility of providing study abroad information and approving study abroad transfer credits for majors to individual departments. In and of itself, this is not a bad idea. In fact, this conscientiously accommodates the differing curriculums and academic pedagogies of each department. In practice, this decentralized decision-making process results in an ad hoc system that can be unnecessarily prohibitive to students who wish to have a formative study abroad experience and complete their major.

Wisconsin led wire-to-wire in the first game of the Fort Myers Tip-Off as they bested No. 24 Virginia, 65-41. The Badgers (3-2, 0-0 Big 10) were led by the inside presence of junior forward Steven Crowl, who had 15 points on 7-10 shooting paired with 10 rebounds — 4 of them on offense. The Cavaliers (4-1, 0-0 ACC) had no answer for the seven-footer, getting routed on the boards 48-21 overall and 20-3 on the offensive glass.

The recently founded chapter of Partners in Health Engage at U.Va. is dedicated to providing healthcare for all. Since its inception at the University last spring, PIH has grown steadily and partnered with other organizations on Grounds to provide students with tools to tackle pressing global health inequalities.

The Virginia women’s basketball team experienced its first defeat of the season when it played No. 25 Oklahoma Sunday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers (3-1, 0-0 ACC) managed to trim down the point difference after a hot start from the visiting team, but it was not enough to overcome the Sooners (5-0, 0-0 Big 12), who pulled away for an 82-67 victory.

Carbon emissions are down by 44.6 percent at the University, per the Committee on Sustainability’s 2022-23 annual report. According to the report, the group remains on track to achieve the goals of its long term sustainability plan, including becoming carbon neutral and fossil fuel free by 2030.

The Honor Committee discussed areas for improvement in their formal bylaws, such as purpose and scope for the Panel for Sanction, and outlined finals period events for students at their meeting Sunday. The meeting had 10 out of 30 members present, meaning the Committee did not reach quorum and could not vote on any topic regarding the constitution or bylaws.

Virginia men’s soccer hosted FIU at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville for a matchup in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday. The No. 11 Cavaliers (11-3-4, 5-2-1 ACC) were able to earn a 2-1 win in overtime despite a strong opponent and very tense match, as the Panthers (10-5-4, 5-1-2 ACC) fought persistently against Virginia in an aggressive match.

Students filled tables, couches, the staircase and even the floor of 1515 Saturday to cheer on student musicians at WXTJ’s first-ever Jazz and R&B night. Lured by free pizza but retained by a mesmerizing show, spectators were thoroughly engaged throughout the student-radio station’s three-and-a-half hour program.

Students and Charlottesville community members gathered on Grounds Saturday to run in the 32nd annual 4th Year 5k. The run was organized by the University’s Peer Health Educators — a student group that aims to encourage holistic wellbeing among students — and is meant to promote a safer and more caring culture around alcohol consumption.

Virginia men’s and women’s cross country ended their season Saturday morning with the honor of hosting the NCAA XC Championship Meet at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va. — a first since 1987. Unfortunately, both teams struggled to improve their performance from the 2022 NCAA XC Championship Meet, with the women’s team finishing No. 15 overall — a large difference from their ninth-place finish last year — and the men’s team finishing No. 22 overall — the same as the year before.

The student-run cast of Rocky Horror at U.Va. screened “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in Newcomb Hall Theater Friday evening, a semesterly tradition drawing an enthusiastic audience of die-hard “Rocky” fans and new viewers alike. Bubbles blew, toilet paper flew and cast members shed a layer or two as the 1975 cult-classic played behind a live shadow cast reenactment.

Virginia volleyball hosted Duke Friday for its penultimate home game of the 2023 season. The Cavaliers (10-16, 3-13 ACC) were unable to generate any momentum in a tight first two sets, eventually getting swept by the Blue Devils (18-9, 9-7 ACC).

Virginia football returned home to Scott Stadium Saturday and proceeded to play its most complete game of the season, outlasting Duke 30-27. The Cavaliers (3-8, 2-5 ACC) never trailed in the game and showed the potential of a young but talented roster in the victory over the Blue Devils (6-5, 3-4 ACC).

The Board of Visitors Finance Committee held a public comment session on proposed tuition increases for the next two academic years Friday, including breakdowns of the University’s use and sourcing of funding. Committee members also presented on the University’s financial aid programs and the financial support the University receives from the state.
