Virginia returns home this Saturday to face Duke at Scott Stadium. This season has been full of heartbreak for the Cavaliers (2-8, 1-5 ACC), who have played most of their games close but have often been unable to seal the deal with a win. Their most recent game might have been the most disappointing, as Louisville rallied for 17 fourth quarter points to avoid the upset.

Virginia took on Texas Southern in their third home game of the season Thursday night. The offense struggled at times to find scoring, but the Cavaliers (4-0, 0-0 ACC) turned in a vintage defensive performance to hold the Tigers (0-3, 0-0 SWAC) to just 14 first half points in a 62-33 victory. In the absence of sophomore guard Isaac McKneely, Coach Bennett opted to start junior guard Dante Harris for what was his first start in a Virginia uniform.

2023 has not been a banner year for Virginia football, especially on the offensive side of the ball. The Cavaliers (2-8, 1-6 ACC) fare poorly in almost every traditional offensive stat, ranking 80th or lower in points per game, turnovers per game and yards per game. On a more granular level, the offense has averaged 1.8 points per drive, and 5.15 yards per play, good for 90th and 100th in the country, respectively. In Bill Connelly’s offensive SP+ metric, Virginia ranks 104th.

When Virginia fans think of the powerhouses of the University’s athletics, the school’s varsity teams come to mind. But a new dynasty is building at the club level as well. Virginia women’s rugby has overcome injury over the past two years to stake their claim as one of the best club teams in the country. It has been a dominating season for the Flamingos (6-1), winning all but one of their seven opening fixtures before regionals this fall.

If you are reading this, you are probably pathetically weak. I mean this in a completely kind and respectful manner, but I know what you are like. For Hoos or Hokies, we all have our routines, following the same guide. These schedules are ingrained in muscle memory and crucially supplemented by Google Calendar — week in and week out. We go to the same dining hall, sit with the same people, go to the same club meetings and bunker down in the same study spots. While there’s nothing wrong with the routine, it’s really hard to break — routine is “known,” easily dependable and comfortable. So why would we venture away from what we already know we like and works for us? Half of the answer, I have realized, lies in the monotony of “the same”.
