Opponents go down easy at Coke Classic

Carryn Weigand's five-year Cavalier career culminated in consecutive terms as co-captain because she uses her head. Usually that refers to athletic intelligence, but lately it has come to have a literal meaning as well.

As of last week, Weigand had not scored in four years, but yesterday at Klöckner Stadium, she headed home her second goal in three games to give the Virginia women's soccer team the cushion it needed for a 2-1 victory against Hartford. The goal also won the Cavs the third annual Coca-Cola Classic tournament.

The No. 15 Cavaliers (6-2-0, 2-0-0 ACC) pulled a pair of upsets in this weekend's tourney, knocking off No. 8 Stanford Friday night, 3-2, before de-feathering the fifth-ranked Hawks.

Virginia's Angela Hucles, who notched the winning goal against the Cardinal (5-3-0), sewed up the tournament MVP award with a perfect cross that second-year Lindsey Grubbs headed home in the 32nd minute for the Cavaliers' first score yesterday.

Ten minutes into the second half, Weigand sliced into the box to head Meredith Rhodes' corner kick past Hawk keeper Ingrid Sternhoff.

"It's becoming routine," joked Weigand, who scored in almost identical fashion last weekend at N.C. State.

Hartford (4-1-1) cut the Cav lead in half in the 81st minute, as their long-ball offense finally paid dividends. Senior Tori Munro caught the Virginia defense in transition with a blast inside the right post past reserve keeper Megan Boehm. Up until that point, Boehm and her predecessor in goal, Julie Harris, had snuffed the Hawks' quick-strike attack.

"We hadn't played a team like Hartford yet this year," said Jill Maxwell, a fifth-year forward and one of three Cavaliers named to the All-Tournament team. "They're less possession-oriented than we are, which we seem to have a tough time against, but we did well."

Along with Hucles and Maxwell, second-year center mid Lori Lindsey rounded out the Cavalier representatives on the All-Tournament team.

Katie Tracy, Lindsey's midfield partner, did not have as much fun this weekend. The third-year suffered a first-degree strain of the medial collateral ligament in her right knee against Stanford, Henrichs said.

Laura Gaworecki also sat out yesterday's game. The second-year wing midfielder played 70 minutes Friday after spraining her ankle before the game, earning her high praise from Heinrichs, who said she did not learn of the injury until after the game.

However, Heinrichs said neither player should be sidelined long.

"I think they'll both be okay in a week," she said.
