Lead editorial

Grade-A Jabronis

Being a daily newspaper, we like to compare ourselves to the best college newspapers in the nation, and occasionally forget that our entire staff turns over every four years. This week, we bid adieu to some of the people who have kept The Cavalier Daily at the top of its game.

Michael Greenwald was our Editor-in-Chief for the last year, and was everything a leader should be. He knew his role and conducted himself with energy, character and class.

Executive Editor Masha Herbst set a standard for the newspaper, and made sure the people she interacted with lived up to their abilities.

We all felt that Emily Kane was a little crazy, and upon becoming Managing Editor she proved us all right. Emily is one of the toughest and strongest people we have ever seen at the paper, and her resilience will be missed.

Chief Financial Officer Dan Cooper's negotiating and foresight improved the paper immensely. We owe a large part of our expanded office space to his pursuit of quality.

No one at the paper could match Operations Manager Sonia Karim's eye for layout. She brought her own style to the paper's office and the print edition everyday.

Assistant Managing Editor Katie Lane is an incredibly courageous person that made amazing sacrifices for the betterment of The Cavalier Daily. Her work as editor of the Focus department will be remembered and emulated for a long time.

Keith Moores was the paper's first Director of Information Technology, and spent an entire summer coordinating the installation of new computing equipment in our office.

Meg Scheu put in an enormous amount of time as News editor and her soft-spoken composure earned the love and admiration of her staff.

Lauren Shepherd served as News editor from 1998-99 and was a kind friend to her writers. She brought a new appreciation for professionalism and a love for journalism to the News pages.

It will be impossible to forget Sports editor John Moorehouse, whose dedication to his department - and a 20-page ACC basketball supplement - was matched only by his always positive attitude.

It's hard to write about Sports editor Tracy Berman as she still works at the paper despite her waning time at the University. She remains one of the quickest learners and best motivators we have ever seen.

Kris Wright served as Sports editor from 1998-99, and also put in a semester as Production Editor. His constant support during the hardest times has made him the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.

Ben Nuckols is an amazing writer and an even more amazing stickler for proper punctuation. He brought a higher standard of writing to his department in his term as Arts and Entertainment editor.

Amy Startt and Katie Dodd served as Opinion editors from 1998-99 and 1999-2000, respectively, and served as matriarchs to their Opinion family.

Life editor Mary Rekas was a consistent presence in the basement who rarely complained and put out a quality page day in and day out.

Online editor Kevin Hirst was a large reason The Cavalier Daily Online Edition looks as good as it does today. Kevin's programming wizardry laid the groundwork for the creative design you see now.

David Z. Rose was the first Health and Science Editor and built the department from the ground up.

Business editor Amanda Batt took over an ailing department and left it much stronger than when she entered. Graphics editor Melissa Huhn was one of the strongest editors her department has ever seen. She set the standard for graphics in the paper.

Jack-of-all-trades Sparky Clarkson seems to have been around forever. He served as a Health and Science associate editor and an Opinion associate as well. He also wrote a regular opinion column for as long as anyone can remember.

Claire Edwards amazed us all with her ability to juggle a pre-med schedule and an undying dedication to the newspaper.

Photo senior associate editor Jonathan Kwon lent his artistic eye to the images on the paper and his technical knowledge to his department.

Production associate and technician Paul Tran may have been one of the laziest members of the paper ever, but his dedication made up for it in the end.

Advertising Page editor Christine Chase has been around the ads office so long, things won't be the same without her.

Columnist Sam Waxman is a giant in his own right without mentioning the fact that he wrote for the paper for his entire undergraduate term at the University and returned this year for a successful encore. Likewise, columnist Peter Brownfeld wrote columns for three years, and was not afraid to speak his mind.

Production associate Candice Pratsch practically had to be told to go home on some nights. Her kindness and sacrifice inspired us on the latest nights.

Focus associate editor Kelli Smith has not been spotted at the newspaper lately, but we still remember her warm smile and the tremendous amount of time she spent on the phone, interviewing sources.

We wish all of our graduating staff members luck in their future endeavors, and remind them all that we are thankful for their guidance of those of us that now fill their shoes.
