DMB to play second show at stadium

After days of speculation and rumor, the Dave Matthews Band confirmed yesterday that it will give a second benefit concert at Scott Stadium on Sunday, April 22.

At a press conference yesterday at the Omni Hotel downtown, Coran Capshaw, the band's general manager, said the band made the decision in the interest of raising more money for local charities and to allow more fans from out of town to attend.

Most tickets for the first show on April 21 were sold March 3 during the pre-sale for local residents and few tickets remained for the general public.

"Efforts were made to ensure that local residents received tickets and every Charlottesville resident that came to the pre-sale got a ticket," said Kevin Spence, production manager for SFX, the concert's promoter.

The ticketing process will be the same the second time around, with a colored wristband lottery held for local residents at Scott Stadium this Friday. Proof of residency will be required when wristbands are distributed between 4 and 5 p.m. At 5 p.m., the wristband color and number for access to the first tickets will be drawn in a lottery. Tickets, costing $46.50 each, will be on sale from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Ticketmaster also will sell tickets at the same time to local residents online at www.ticketmaster.com and by phone at 262-8100. Members of the Warehouse Fan Association will be able to order tickets beforehand at the Warehouse Web site. Tickets go on sale for the general public this Saturday.

  • Ticket sales from the first show already have raised a total of about $850,000.

"With the addition of the second show, take-down costs will be reduced and we hope to raise up to $2.5 million dollars for charity from the two shows combined," Capshaw said.

All proceeds will benefit the Bama Works Fund, the band's charity organization, and the Charlottesville-Albemarle Community Foundation.

"This will be a great end to my four years here at the University," fourth-year Engineering student T.J. Zitkevitz said.

The news of the added show pleased not only fans of the band but University administrators as well.

"We're very pleased that all of this is coming together. We look forward to a great weekend on April 21 and 22," said Leonard W. Sandridge Jr., executive vice president and chief operating officer.
