Odds and Ends

Polish up for spring>

Before finals start creeping up and fingernails are bitten down to nothing from stress, treat yourself to a little something at the University Bookstore: a free manicure.

Beginning yesterday afternoon from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and continuing each afternoon through Monday, the Clinique service counter at the bookstore is offering free nail care and polishing.

"I saw an advertisement for this event in the bathroom of Alderman Library," fourth-year College student Anne Magnan said as her nails were being filed. "Bathroom ads are the best form of advertisement because it is a captive audience. You are going nowhere," she said.

Clinique consultant Casandra Sims begins the complimentary manicure by applying a soothing hand moisturizer. She then files each nail before painting.

Magnan chose to have her nails painted in Hotsy Totsy, a deep shade of burgundy.

"I have a formal this weekend, and the color matches my dress perfectly," Magnan said. "I usually get my nails done at least a couple times a week, so I decided to save a few dollars today by coming to the bookstore."

Other color choices include Pinkini, Tutu Pink, Buffy, Wild Delight and Red Red - all of which are varying degrees of pink and red.

Clinique often does promotions such as this in order to do more business and bring more people to the counter to try new colors and products.

The Clinique counter at the bookstore is one of only 16 such counters that exist in college bookstores around the country and with its prime location offers exceptional deals to the students.

"If you are in a sorority, or you have a date function coming up, we can come to the house and give free makeovers for a two hour period," Sims said. "We will also bring new and familiar products to sell."

So far, Clinique's generosity to its customers seems to be working, with eight women signing up for the free manicure in only the first half-hour of the promotion yesterday.

"This has been very enjoyable and a nice treat on a rainy day," Magnan said.
