Billet may transfer

The Rutgers University Sports Information Web site reported yesterday that Virginia has been granted permission to contact Scarlet Knight 6-foot-1 point guard Todd Billet regarding the possibility of his transferring to play men's basketball for the Cavaliers.

Billet, a sophomore, led the Scarlet Knights in the 2001 season in scoring average, with 16.6 points. He also set a Rutgers record with 82 three-pointers made and he was named third team All-Big East.

Billet's brother Geoff also played basketball for the Scarlet Knights and was an assistant coach under former Rutgers coach Kevin Bannon.

According to Sportsline.com, Rutgers University Director of Athletics Robert Mulcahy granted Billet's request to transfer and confirmed that he would go to Virginia.

"I'd like to thank the Billet family for six wonderful years," Mulcahy said. "Geoff, Todd and their parents are class acts and they will be missed. I know I speak for everyone in the Rutgers community in expressing my sorrow that Todd is seeking to transfer."

Billet could not be reached for comment, and his parents declined to comment.

NCAA passes three measures

Yesterday the NCAA passed three resolutions that will impact student athletes.

First, the council put a limit on the number of regular season men's and women's basketball games that teams can play. It set the cap at 29 games, which will include all preseason tournament games.

Next, the panel decided to allow elite athletes to receive a one-time, $20,000 loan while in school. The loan will be based on an athlete's projected draft position in five sports - men's and women's basketball, football, men's ice hockey and baseball.

Third, the council decided to base men's basketball scholarship limitations on gradation rates. Teams that graduate 50 percent or more of their players will be allowed 13 scholarships. Those that do not will be limited to 12.

Hall of Fame calls on Stockton

Virginia men's tennis coach Dick Stockton will be inducted into the United States Tennis Association's Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame on April 20.

As a professional player, Stockton was ranked No. 8 in the world for singles play in 1977. He reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in 1974 and the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in 1976 and 1977.

For doubles, Stockton was the U.S. Open Mixed Doubles champion in 1975 and the Wimbledon Mixed Doubles runner-up in 1976. He also won the French Open Mixed Doubles champion in 1984 and was the World Mixed Doubles champion from 1975-1977.

Odom heads to South Carolina

Wake Forest men's basketball coach Dave Odom announced on Tuesday he will take the position of head coach at South Carolina. South Carolina's previous two choices turned it down.

Odom, who had a 240-132 record at Wake Forest in his 12 years there, said he met briefly with South Carolina's players and asked them to "give me a chance to be their friend first, get to know me first, and then I hope they'll want me to be their coach."
