Charlottesville sees local area code change

A new "434" area code opened for Charlottesville residents June 1 because of a depletion of seven digit telephone numbers in the old calling area.

The Western half of the "804" calling area was changed to the new number, affecting Albemarle County and surrounding areas.

The old 804 area code will continue to work until January 15, 2002, giving residents an opportunity to make a smooth transition.

Besides alerting friends, family and business associates to the area code change, local companies and residents may need to reprogram some telephones, fax machines and computer modems to operate under the new calling area.

Cell phones with the old area code also need to be reprogrammed. But most companies are giving customers a two-year grace period to make the transition.
