Violence occurs at Sigma Chi fraternity

In the third such incident in under a week, Charlottesville Police are investigating another physical altercation near Grounds. The latest incident took place outside of the Sigma Chi fraternity house early Sunday morning.

Though the incident still is under investigation and no arrests have been made, Charlottesville Police Sgt. Richard Hudson said police have suspects. He added that guests at the Sigma Chi party were familiar with the four individuals who allegedly caused the altercation.

Police believe the incident began when four males arrived at the Sigma Chi fraternity house uninvited. The individuals were asked to leave, at which time they did.

However, at 3:15 a.m. they returned, at which point a physical altercation with Sigma Chi members is alleged to have taken place.

Shortly thereafter Charlottesville Police responded to calls related to the incident and a police report was filed.

At least two people received emergency medical treatment following the incident.

Sigma Chi President Kenneth George would not comment on the details of the incident, but said that his house is "cooperating with the police and the University at this time."

Aaron Laushway, assistant dean of students for fraternity and sorority life, expressed displeasure toward the incident.

"We deplore this kind of behavior of student assaulting student," Laushway said. "It is entirely contradictory to the purpose of the University."

Just six days before, on Aug. 28,, gunshots were fired in front of the Sigma Nu fraternity house during a Black Caesar- sponsored event. Colonel Jose Martin was leaving the non- University related party when he was attacked by several individuals.

Kristopher O'Neil Smith and Bryan Pierre Slaughter were both charged with felonious assault in connection with the incident. Neither suspect was affiliated with the University.

Also on the night of Aug. 28, a 20-year-old man alleged that he was assaulted by four men in the parking lot of the Buddhist Biker Bar and Grill. After sustaining minor injuries during the altercation, he alleged the men stole his wallet.
