Committee selects new Darden dean

A seven-member committee assigned to select the new dean for the Darden School of Business Administration will announce today its selection of Darden Prof. Robert S. Harris for the position.

"The official announcement of who the next dean will be will be made" today, said C. Ray Smith, search committee chairman and interim Darden dean.

Today's announcement marks the end of a three-month search, which began when Ted Snyder announced his resignation from the University.

"We were looking for someone who knew the school and was loyal to us," said Susan Chaplinsky, a professor of business administration at Darden and a selection committee member.

Harris is a C. Stewart Sheppard Professor of Business Administration. In 1998 he was named the vice president and chief learning officer of the United Technologies Corporation.

Smith has served as interim dean since Snyder's departure on June 30. Snyder took a position as dean of the business school at the University of Chicago after only three years as dean of the Darden School.

The search committee consisted of Darden faculty members James Freeland, Patricia Werhane, Susan Chaplinsky and Martin Davidson. The alumni representative was Donald M. Wilkinson, who received an MBA from the Darden School in 1966. The student representative was Adam Carter, a second year in the Darden school.

"What we were looking for was continuity," Davidson said. "The most important thing was to find someone who is able to commit to the Darden School long enough to get things done."

Harris take the position amid a host of expansions. A 500-car parking garage and a 450-seat auditorium will open next year, and the MBA program has accepted 60 additional students than normal for the 2004 class.
