An estimated 36 cars were vandalized near the Rugby Road area sometime during Wednesday night and early yesterday morning, according to Charlottesville City Police and University Police.
An estimated 17 car tires were slashed while parked on University Circle, Rugby Road and Madison Lane.
Eight cars in the Carr's Hill parking lot and 11 in the Culbreth Theater lot also sustained damage.
"We believe that there are quite a few more," said Charlottesville Police Sgt. David Shifflett said. "We're looking at close to 30 cars in the city."
At least one tire was slashed in all of the reported incidents to the Charlottesville Police. The reports also included one shattered car window and a slashed soft-top roof.
The vehicles in the Culbreth area had damage done to the tires while the vehicles at Carr's Hill sustained other damage such as scratches, University Police Sgt. Tracie Craner said.
A police officer discovered the damage on one of the cars in Culbreth, Craner said.
Reports still are flowing into University and Charlottesville police headquarters.
University Police left notes on other damaged vehicles requesting the victims phone in reports.
Charlottesville police are waiting for the victims to report their individual vandalism cases, Shifflett said.
After the cases are reported, they will be sent to the investigations department of the Charlottesville Police.
"We are not aware of any suspects at this moment," said Shifflett.
University Police also still are investigating the incidents.
Vandalism is a class one misdemeanor that could have a penalty of up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
Many students are beginning to feel wary about parking their cars.
"It makes me not want to park there," said third-year College student Mike Tierney, a University Circle resident. "It's going to be a pain and a problem"
