Odds and Ends

For every bare space on a wall, there is a poster. In fact, the University Bookstore's poster sale has a selection of over 1,000. Under the little white tent in Newcomb Plaza, encased in those heavy black plastic sleeves, are posters whose topics range from art to movies, from music to scenery.

First-year College student Daphne Allen already had two posters picked out well before she was ready to go to the cash register. She plans to decorate her bland dormitory room with posters of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Moulin Rouge" -- her favorite movies.

Jeff Apostolou, road manager for the sale, said empty dorm walls make fall the busiest season for poster sales.

The company that runs the sale, Prolific Art, is a wholesale art distributor, but twice a year they go on campus tours. They have 16 tours on the road right now.

"We sell the art posters to students for the same price as to frame shops," Apostolou said. "So what you buy here costs half as much as what you would get at the mall."

Apostolou said some posters are staples from year to year.

Examples include Van Gogh's "Cafe Terrace" and "Starry Night," various Dali paintings, and the films "Fight Club" and "Scarface."

Popular this year are posters of old French advertisements and star actor Vin Diesel.

"Vin Diesel is a good example of a seasonal poster," Apostolou said. "Last year we only sold a few."

Third-year College student Sara Jones came to the sale looking for something a little different than Vin Diesel posters to fill the empty space in her off-Grounds apartment.

She picked out a black and white photo called "Parisian Kiss."

"I thought it was romantic, and our apartment lends itself to black and white prints on the wall," Jones said.

Upperclassmen are drawn to the sale due to wear and tear on old posters and the need to decorate new living spaces.

"I only bought one poster in the last two years," Jones said. "My previous apartment had framed paintings on the wall, but they belonged to another roommate, so I don't have anything."

The sale runs through tomorrow.
