Making connections

The idea of trying to get a job in New York City conjures up images of living in overpriced, tiny apartments while working two menial jobs and jumping at every opportunity to get hired somewhere else.

But it doesn't have to be that hard.

Next Tuesday, University Career Services will hold an information meeting about the New York Recruiting Alliance for third- and fourth-year students interested in a job or an internship in New York.

The NYRA is made up of career services staff from U.Va., University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Smith College and Northwestern University.

The alliance serves as a liaison between students at those schools and companies in New York who are interested in hiring them.

After the information session, students from any school can drop off their resumes in the UCS office by Jan. 17. Folders will be set up for each company participating in the alliance, in areas ranging from public relations and advertising to publishing, legal services, market research, consulting, non-profit work and health services.

The NYRA will then collect the resumes and send them to the individual companies, who will sort through to determine which students they would like to interview. Students will be notified by Jan. 31 if they have been selected.

On Feb. 24, students who have been selected to interview will meet at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square for the NYRA fair. The companies will conduct interviews throughout the day.

While students are responsible for their own travel and accommodations for the trip, University students should be able to travel together to keep costs down, fourth-year College student and UCS intern Pender Ellett said.

After the fair, the individual companies will notify students about further interviews or job offers.

Ellett said in the past two years, 40 University students have been selected for interviews.

The NYRA hopes to recruit for 20 to 30 companies this year.

"If you're interested in working in New York City, you definitely should not pass this up," Ellett said. "It's an easy way to get your resume out there."

Attendance at the information session is not mandatory for participation in the program, but is highly recommended. The session will take place Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the press box in Bryant Hall.
