Volleyball earns ACC honors

Junior libero Whitney Ashcraft and freshman outside hitter Kristin Chaney have been honored by the ACC for their play this season. Ashcraft was named to the 2002 All-ACC First Team, while Chany was named to the All-Freshman squad.

Ashcraft is among the top players in the nation this year with 463 digs in 111 games. Her digs put her fourth among Cavaliers all-time. She had her career-best game against Clemson on Sept. 27 with 29 digs, the eighth-best match total in school history.

Chaney has played several roles for the Cavaliers this season. Starting as a defensive specialist, Chaney moved to setter to fill in for injured sophomore Lily Phillips. Averaging 10.2 assists per game, Chaney started 18 of the Cavaliers' matches this season, and played in all 32 games.

The Cavaliers are currently competing in the ACC Championships in Atlanta, Ga.

Hansard, Starr and Sweet named tri-captains of 2003 Virginia Baseball

Three seniors, left-handed reliever Greg Hansard, right-handed pitcher Shooter Starr and outfielder Chris Sweet have been elected the captains for the upcoming baseball season, Virginia Coach Dennis Womack said.

The three were elected by their teammates, and the choices were well-received by everyone.

All three made significant contributions to last year's team. Sweet was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 37th round but chose to finish his Virginia career instead of turning pro.
