Cavalier Daily elects Bernick editor-in-chief

The Cavalier Daily staff elected its 114th Managing Board Saturday with unusual speed and efficiency, entering Jefferson Hall at 9 a.m. and leaving with a full slate of new leaders before nightfall.

The staff selected third-year College student Justin Bernick editor-in chief. Bernick, an economics major from Virginia Beach, Va., will serve his second term on the Cavalier Daily's Managing Board. He was previously the chief financial officer.

Bernick said he considers the coming term a "building year for the Cavalier Daily," looking to improve the paper's infrastructure with computer upgrades, as well as strengthening coverage and content through new recruitment efforts and greater communication with the community.

"We need to get the message out to everyone that this newspaper can be your paper," Bernick said. "All you have to do is come down and write."

Staff members also elected third-year College student Brian Cook as the paper's executive editor. Cook is an American studies and government major from Ridgefield, Conn.

Second-year College student Chris Wilson, an English major from Charlottesville, will serve as the next managing editor.

Guillaume de Torquat was elected chief financial officer. Torquat is an economics and art history major from Paris, France.

Rounding out the paper's Managing Board is second-year Engineering student Andrew Barros, who will serve as operations manager. Barros is a computer science major from Fairfax, Va.

On the Senior Board, third-year College students Megan Moyer and Deirdre Erin Murphy will serve as assistant managing editors. Moyer is an economics major from Ann Arbor, Mich. and Murphy is a history major from Falls Church, Va.

First-year College student Benjamin Sachs, from Virginia Beach, Va., was selected the next director of information technology. Third-year College student Peter Jackson, an economics major from Falls Church, Va., will work as advertising manager.

Staff members also elected a line up of new department editors.

Second-year College students Nick Chapin and Alexis Unkovic were elected news editors. Second-year Engineering student Joe Lemire and second-year College student Kathleen Thornton will fill the sports editor positions.

Second-year College students Anthony Dick and Becky Krystal will serve as opinion editors and third-year College students Lauren Akselrod and Katie Sullivan were tapped as life editors.

Second-year College student Josh Goodman will fill the job of focus editor. The new arts and entertainment editors are third-year Education student Carrie Lopez and second-year College student Philip Runco.

Third-year College Austen Givens and second-year College student Kevin James Wong will serve as nation/world editors.

Second-year College student Alexis Day and third-year College student Lisa Florkowski were selected as photo editors. Third-year College student Alexander Ruhl and second-year College student Greg Scanlon will work as graphics editors.

Production editors are first-year College student Leah Nylen and third-year College student Liz Maurer. Second-year College student Jonathan Soma was tapped as online editor as well as third-year College student Yi Zang.

In addition to elected positions, outgoing department editors also appointed individuals to associate editor posts within each department.

First-year College students Jason Amirhadji and Anthony LaMesa will work as news associate editors, along with second-year College students Natasha Altamirano, Jon Breece, Whitney Garrison, Riley McDonald, Mary Pumphrey and Kara Rowland. They are joined by third-year College students Angela Manese-Lee and Christine Wallace.

Second-year College student J.D. Moss will fill the position of gameday editor. First-year College students Chris Kelly, Sean McLernon, Eric Roper and Melissa Silverman were selected as sports associate editors, as were second-year College students Stephanie Maximous and Jason Wise and third-year College student Matt Trogden.

In the opinion department, first-year College students Maggie Bowden and Patrick Harvey, as well as third-year College student Alec Solotorovsky, will serve as associate editors.

Life associate editors are first-year College students Jennifer McDaniel, Meghan Moran and Neela Pal, along with second-year College students Beth Bland and Patricia Cooper.

Third-year College students Matt Amodio and Lisa Shelby will serve as arts and entertainment associate editors.

Third-year College student Peter Dunn is the photo senior associate editor. Second-year Engineering student Dan McCool was tapped as photo associate editor, as were third-year Commerce student Süleyman
