The Virginia football team will open its spring minicamp on Friday, officially launching preparation for the 2003 season.
Practices will run from March 18 until April 19 when camp will conclude with the annual spring festival and game.
A handful of practices this spring will be open to the public free of charge, including Friday's opening practice, scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Sessions on March 29, March 30, March 31, April 6 and the April 19 festival and game also will be open to fans. Those who wish to attend must pick up an admission credential at the reception desk in the football office at the McCue Center.
The Cavaliers surprised many prognosticators last year with their 9-5 record, including a 48-22 trouncing of No. 15 West Virginia in the inaugural Continental Tire Bowl.
The team also finished second in the ACC and No. 22 in the final AP poll of the 2002 season.
Virginia returns nine starters on offense, including Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Matt Schaub. Schaub set or tied 10 school records last season and won ACC Player of the Year.
Eight starters on defense also will be coming back for the Cavaliers. Virginia returns 41 letterman from last season.
Coach Al Groh will be back for his third season on the sidelines, but will be without last year's offensive coordinator, Bill Musgrave, who resigned to join the staff of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL.
