William and Mary tradition turns deadly

A College of William and Mary student died Tuesday from drowning in a campus pond, known as the Crim Dell.

Alex Reyno, 21, of Springfield, Va., studied public policy, was a member of the Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity and a student guide for the admissions office.

It is a tradition for William and Mary student guides to jump into the campus pond during their final tour.It is approximately 10 to 12 feet deep and very muddy.

After jumping into the pond, and pulling in another friend with him, Reyno never surfaced. Reyno's jump fatally injured his spine. The other guide jumping was uninjured.

Emergency crews arrived shortly after Reyno's friends pulled his body out of the water, and he died approximately 45 minutes later.
