Hospital to unveil Breast Cancer Center

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. today will mark the official opening of a new Breast Cancer Center at the University.

Former Virginia Gov. George Allen's wife, Susan Allen, Medical Center CEO Ed Howell, School of Medicine Dean Timothy Garson and Director of the Center Michael Weber are scheduled to speak at the ceremony. Breast cancer survivors also will be invited to join Susan Allen in cutting the ribbon, Program Administrator Linda Rose said.

Renovations for the Center cost the Medical Center $2 million.

"It's for more than just the physical facility, we invested in quality physicians who are a part of the Center as well," Director of Community Outreach David Cattell-Gordon said.

The Center is the combination of several elements important to aiding patients and potential patients.

"One of the most important factors is it's a multi-care center," Cattell-Gordon said. "This is really cutting-edge technology combined with expertise in breast care. We brought together medicine and science and the community in a unique space."

The Center's staff will include imaging staff and clinic staff, which totals about 40 people, Rose said.

The Center has several different departments to cater to the needs of the patients.

"There was the desire to create an interdisciplinary treatment of breast cancer imaging, which is traditionally in its own department," Rose said. "The desire of the breast team was to bring together imaging, mammography, breast ultrasound and breast biopsy, clinic breast surgeons, lymphedema clinic, a high risk breast clinic and ductal lavage."

Construction for the center started immediately following the new year, Cattell-Gordon said.

The Center will be located in the hospital's west complex on Jefferson Park Avenue, on the main floor.

Center staff will meet frequently to discuss policy for the Center.

"The breast team meets every week to make the right decisions to give the best care," Cattell-Gordon said.

"With the creation of this unique and beautiful breast care center, we have people, a place, talent and a real commitment to have leadership in breast care in this community," Cattell-Gordon said. "There are some unique advantages to breast care at U.Va."

Community members joined in the creation of the Center.

"Women of the community, many of whom are patients, helped to design the Center to meet their needs," Cattell-Gordon said.
