Police responded to calls of shots fired at the Rotunda around 4:30 a.m. Monday, where they discovered a deceased male who appeared to have died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, according to University Spokesperson Bethanie Glover. The investigation is ongoing, and additional details are not available at this time.
A message was sent through the University Alerts system at around 5:10 a.m. informing of police activity at the Rotunda, and to avoid the area. Over an hour later, at approximately 6:27, the alert said that police were investigating a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and that the weapon was secured.
The alert did not inform recipients that the man was deceased. While the man's identity has not been revealed to the public out of respect for his family's privacy, Kenyon Bonner, vice president and chief student affairs officer, confirmed that he is a Class of 2019 alumnus in an email to the University Monday morning.
Police are continuing to investigate, and Glover said that they ask members of the public to avoid the area until the investigation has concluded. The incident occurred on the southernmost side of the Rotunda, the side that faces the Lawn, where some fourth-year students as well as some administrators and professors live.
No additional information is available at this time, but Glover said University Police will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.
