Bomb threats close Old and New Cabell Halls, cancel classes

The latest in a series of bomb threats on Grounds came last Thursday when New and Old Cabell Halls were evacuated following a phoned-in threat.

The threat was received around 10 a.m. and the buildings in question were promptly evacuated. The buildings remained closed until 2 p.m., according to students and faculty at the scene.

The threat was handled by Charlottesville Police since the threat was called in from off-Grounds.

University Police are aiding with the investigation, but neither police force was available to comment.

The threat was the second of the year, the first being at Ruffner Hall, and follows a string of similar threats made in 2001 after September 11.

English Prof. James Kinney had his class in New Cabell Hall canceled because of the bomb threat.

"I had no details about the bomb threat," Kinney said. "I learned of it trying to walk over there about 10:57."

Kinney said he is making alternate arrangements to avoid the further cancellation of classes.

"I am planning to have a fallback plan for future bomb threats," he said. "I need to e-mail people before class tomorrow to state a sort of gathering point."

John Manzella, a third-year College student, said he did not appreciate the bomb threat that canceled his Elementary Arabic class.

"I had an Arabic midterm the next day," Manzella said. "I got screwed over because of the bomb threat. There was no time to make it up and no time to plan it out."

Manzella also described the scene when he came for class.

"We were told that you can't go in there," Manzella said. "The building was blocked off with yellow tape"
