The Charlottesville Fire Department received a $359,000 grant Tuesday as part of the Fire Act Grant.
The grant money was approved by the Office for Homeland Security and the United States Fire Administration, according to Charlottesville Fire Department Battalion Chief John Purcell.
The funds will be used to purchase individual breathing apparatuses for each individual fire fighter.
"We are going to use that money for our self contained breathing apparatus," he said. "We are going to totally replace all of our existing breathing apparatuses. The new apparatuses will be of the latest technology and meeting the latest standards."
The new equipment will better enable fire fighters to combat fires and deal with potential acts of terrorism. The equipment will comply with the Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear certificates.
"Our equipment is necessary for us to deal with anything that may happen," Purcell said.
