The Recording Industry Association of America is now notifying suspected music sharers of its plans to file a lawsuit in order to avoid legal action.
Those who receive warning letters are given 10 days to contact the RIAA and discuss settlement options. The RIAA has warned 204 people this way, in contrast to last month's tactics against 261 alleged file swappers who were not notified beforehand.
RIAA president Cary Sherman told the Associated Press the decision was a result of feedback criticizing the trade group's lawsuits against targets that included a 12-year-old girl and a grandmother. Sixty-four cases have been settled so far with awards averaging at about $3,000 per case.
