After sustaining severe head injuries during an altercation outside the Sigma Chi fraternity house, second-year College student and University football player Carson Ward left the University Medical Center this week in improved condition.
Ward underwent emergency surgery to remove blood clots in his brain and remained unconscious for several days after the alleged incident, which occurred in the early hours of Nov. 1.
University Medical Center spokesperson Lisa Gilliam confirmed yesterday that Ward has been discharged from the hospital.
Charlottesville Police Det. Lee Sidebottom reported to local news source, WINA, that Ward has been moved to an undisclosed out-of-state private location to continue his recovery.
"He is progressing," Sidebottom said in a phone message to The Cavalier Daily.
Sidebottom could not be reached for further comment yesterday.
Charlottesville Police have charged fourth-year College students and Sigma Chi brothers Kurt Rupprecht and John P. Selph with malicious wounding and class 3 felony charges in conjunction with the alleged assault.
National Sigma Chi President Mark Anderson said yesterday he was not aware of any civil charges against the University chapter of Sigma Chi or against the two individuals involved in the altercation.
"There has been no action taken to remove any of the brothers from the fraternity," Anderson said. "All that we are aware of is a police investigation."
Although Ward's condition keeps him from active participation in football games and practices, Assistant Media Relations Director Michael Colley said that Ward has not been dropped from the Virginia football roster.
"He is definitely still a member of the team," Colley said.
