Council urges more hours, cafe for Clark

The newly renovated Science and Engineering Library in Clark Hall soon will undergo additional changes with the advent of extended hours next semester and the addition of a cafe/lounge area in the mural room.

Student Council Engineering School Rep. Adam Steadman and College Rep. Tanay Amin proposed a Council resolution to extend closing time from midnight to 2 a.m., which was approved by Council's representative body last night.

Steadman said the idea for the proposal stemmed from student concerns about the recently refurbished library's midnight closing time.

"Because of recent renovations, it just doesn't seem right," he said.

Steadman said he expects students to take advantage of the extended hours, noting that there is a "decent amount" of students in the library around closing time.

Charlotte Morford, director of communications for the University libraries, said she is pleased with the resolution.

"We are delighted that students are taking this initiative, and we're happy that the renovated Science and Engineering Library is so popular," she said.

Morford said if the resources, such as library employees, needed to extend the hours, are available, a pilot program will be conducted to test the new hours.

"Primarily, it's people," she said. "It's student workers, and then it's a supervisor who can help the student workers if they need it."

Morford said additional staff members also are needed to fill in for student workers who are unable to make their shift.

Funding for the extended hours still is being discussed amongst Council members and library officials.

Clark Hall will undergo another modification with the addition of a cafe/lounge space in the mural room, an empty space at the entrance of the library that previously housed rock displays.

Engineering School Representatives George McArthur and James Van Dyke and Council President Daisy Lundy sponsored the resolution, which also was passed last night.

An exact construction date is unknown, but McArthur said it is "something that could come about pretty soon, maybe even next semester."

McArthur said the purpose of the cafe is to increase interaction between students in the College and Engineering School since there currently is not a cafe closer to the south side of Grounds and the Engineering School.

"Not only is it a library where students go to study, it's also a library that brings students together," he said.

Lundy said the cafe would serve as a place for students to meet with teaching assistants or work on group projects.

The cafe will be similar to that in Alderman Library -- that is, a combination of a cafe to buy snacks, coffee, and possibly ice cream and a lounge area.
