A Va. House of Delegates' panel unanimously passed a resolution Wednesday requesting that Congress pass a constitutional amendment denying gay marriage.
Del. Robert R. McDonnell, R-Virginia Beach, sponsored the resolution which urges Congress to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
The Defense of Marriage Act, passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996, defines marriage as such. The bill secured passage by the U.S. Congress in a overwhelming 85-14 vote by the U.S. Senate.
President George W. Bush said if this act is deemed unconstitutional by federal courts, he would support a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a heterosexual union between a man and a woman.
McDonnell said gay activists' victories in court threaten Virginia's anti-gay marriage laws, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Gay activists' have secured recent victories in both the U.S. Supreme Court and the Massachusetts Supreme Court.
The resolution was passed by the Rules Committee without any debate.
