The University Medical School, in conjunction with its department of psychiatric medicine, has decided to form a medical reserve corps in order to better serve the surrounding community, University news services announced at the end of last year.
The purpose of the U.Va. Medical Reserve Corps is to help strengthen local health initiatives as well as emergency response capabilities. The reserve corps recently received a federal grant to will help with further development of the program.
Medical students Kimberly Dowdell and David Beckert have taken charge as student directors. They will begin working towards training students for three main initiatives: emergency response volunteers will work as a multi-discipline team during disasters, volunteers will participate in education services in order to instruct on emergency preparedness and augmentation volunteers will supplement units when necessary.
