Clark disappointed by primary losses

RICHMOND, Va. -- Kevin Norton traveled 2,340 miles from Gilroy, Calif., to be in Richmond last night for the Virginia primary. The stop was his third on a multi-leg trip that has included Phoenix and Seattle so far, part of his plan to crisscross the country in support of Gen. Wesley Clark.

As an Irish citizen who lived in Ireland for six years before returning to the United States, 21-year-old Norton said it is obvious that Clark is the best candidate for president. Norton, however, couldn't vote for the general in yesterday's election.

This did not stop him from gathering with about 40 others last night at the converted 7-11 store that serves as Clark's Virginia headquarters. They met after making thousands of last-minute calls and campaigning at polls down to the wire.

"That's what a presidential campaign does -- it brings people together," Virginia campaign spokesperson Maurice Henderson said.

Many said they were inspired by Clark's character.

Campaign supporter Chris Hilbert said the campaign has motivated him to run for a position on Richmond's City Council despite the fact that he, like Clark, has no prior experience in public office.

Others said they were touched more directly by the general's campaign. Former five-term Congressman Lewis Payne was personally asked by Clark to run his Virginia campaign over Thanksgiving dinner last fall. Payne, a member of the University Board of Visitors, ran Gov. Mark R. Warner's successful campaign for office in 2001.

"I'm pleased and proud to have worked on this campaign," Payne said.
