ITC is offering a "patch" service that will automatically update anti-virus software for faculty and staff computers at the University.
The service is a result of escalating virus threats to computer operating systems.
"It is a service to automatically patch your Microsoft operating system," said Shirley Payne, director for security coordination and policy. "The reason is that we are being bombarded, as any other institution, with new, faster-spreading, more dangerous hacking attempts -- worms and viruses -- that take advantage of vulnerabilities on primarily Microsoft operating systems."
Faculty and staff can go to a link through the ITC Web site, sign up for the service and automatically receive updated anti-virus software.
"The best way to prevent exploit is to keep your operating systems up to date with anti-virus software, to use anti-virus software and to keep that software up to date," said Payne.
Non-faculty interested in anti-virus protection also can access a site through the ITC Web page that will explain how to use the new service.
"We are trying to be very proactive and do what we can to educate and offer services to meet the requirement of keeping operating systems and anti-virus software up to date," Payne said.
